As we began gathering information and evaluating our current facilities, one important area that we wanted to be sure we explored, was from our teachers. We wanted to understand how they would describe our facilities, but also, the types of activities they find most valuable in the classroom, and which of those the current facilities are best at supporting. In a lot of ways, they are the link between the skills, programs, and delivery and the building itself.

In order to do this, BLDD initiated a survey among the district’s staff.  We got roughly 100 responses and it gives a great look into our district’s facilities from the viewpoint of our educators. The chart below outlines the amount of responses from each of our four facilities.

Word Clouds

These first few questions were open ended, and were intended to gather general descriptions of our facilities.  We have created word clouds that based on the frequency of a term – results in that word growing larger in the word cloud.

Comparative Charts

In addition to those descriptive questions, we also asked teachers about their spaces and the types of instruction they prefer or see as most effective.

Here we review a comparison between the dark blue bars, which ask, “how effective do you find each of the following instructional methods” and the orange bar, “what instructional methods does your space allow you to employ effectively”.

In summary "what you want to do” vs “what you can do”.

Another key component that came out in the descriptive questions, and a tenant of a future focused learning environment  relates to flexibility.

This chart here, broken down by building, shows the difference between how flexible their current spaces are (blue) vs how important flexibility is to an effective learning environment (orange).

Future Solutions

So now that we have evaluated what is important, and how it might compare to our current space. – these next few questions related to solutions – and getting feedback into what improvements might be most effective.
