ENGLISH ENRICHMENT

MPUIN-JKT.SCH.ID, JAKARTA–MTs Pembangunan UIN Jakarta held English Enrichment program on July 17-29, 2021 for all 7 grade students in the academic year 2021/2022. This is the second time where MTs Pembangunan collaborated with JagoBahasa.com team, Pare Kediri, East Java. The aims of the English Enrichment are both to improve students’ ability in using English and to cluster all 7 grade students either in regular or bilingual class as one of the requirements except their PPDB score. The program was arranged virtually via Zoom Meeting application for 2 weeks length with 10 material and 3 examinations; pre-test, mid-test, and posttest. There were 170 students from 8 classes participated in the English Enrichment 2021.

English Enrichment is exactly run into build students’ productive skill especially their speaking skill. JagoBahasa.com is chosen due to its tagline “speak like a pro” to help students to be able to speak like a professional and its offers something new and interesting programs during this Covid-19 pandemic. The program was started by pre-test on Saturday, July 17 2021 to observe students’ prior ability in English before the program. The result of pre-test was classified into several groups; low, medium and high and to decrease the gap on students’ capability in each classes. To create more effective and efficient class, the maximum number of students were only 10 students since then the teacher has longer time to ask them to practice.

English Enrichment is officially opened on July 21, 2021 by the opening remarks from the Director of Madrasah Pembangunan UIN Jakarta, Mr. Dr. H. Bahrissalim, M.A. who said that mastering English is one of the keys to hold the world. He also added by giving the motivation to all 7 grade students to be active in joining the English Enrichment. The last agenda of the opening ceremony was the motivation session from a native speaker from Canada whose teaching English experience more than a decade in Indonesia, Mr. John Pierce, he told to all students to keep it up in learning English and to take all advantages from the English Enrichment program. He also opened a live QnA session with students to discuss directly with him.

There were 17 groups from 170 students in 8 classes, they were taught 10 topics; introducing oneself and others, describing the surrounding, telling the experience, giving direction, getting inspired from role model, planning for the future, finding common mistakes in English, comparing British vs. American, reporting the hype news, and being a news anchor. In the mid of the program, July 26, was held the mid-test to see the students progress after getting 6 materials and continued with the rest of 4 material. The end was the post-test on July 29, 2021 to see the whole progress after finishing all the materials.

The coordinator of English Enrichment program 2021, Mr. Suheri Anggara Putra, M.M. stated that this program runs really well because of the cooperation from students, tutors, and teachers. He also added that the students are really enthusiastic in joining this program and it is hoped to increase students willingness in mastering English. In the end of the program, there are 5 best students during this English program. Three students were chosen from their activeness and the rest of two are from the highest score of post-test they achieved. Keira Alifia Khairunnisa, Nadhifah Hasna Dewi, and Muhammad Evan Aditya were chosen from their activeness in the classroom, meanwhile Sharita Kayla Ardhani and Mikaila Davina Adityo were chosen as the top scorer. They deserve prize from JagoBahasa.com to have free classes started from 2 weeks to 2 months. This achievement should be as a motivation for other students to always keep up their eagerness in studying English and mastering foreign languages. (DN)
