Dance

Dance provides students the opportunity to explore expressive movement while developing gross and fine motor skills.  Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced Intermediate, and CI Dance are offered at each grade level.

Beginning Dance

(Full Year) This course will introduce students to the elements of dance, which include the following: space, shape, levels, rhythm, energy qualities and intention.  Students will be exposed to ballet fundamentals, modern dance, jazz and world dance forms. They will have the opportunity to create short movement studies, with their peers, using the elements of dance.  In addition to developing their technical skills and creativity, students will have the opportunity to showcase their work in the Winter Dance Concert. This course has an open enrollment policy.

Intermediate Dance

(Full Year) The Advanced Intermediate level course is designed for students who are ready to expand their technical and performance skills.  They will study multiple dance techniques in depth and learn to embody more advance dances.  Students will be given opportunities to choreograph their own dances and will perform in the Winter Dance concert.  Dance experience is encouraged but not mandated.

Advanced-Intermediate Dance

The Advance Intermediate level course is designed for students who have mastered the intermediate level fundamentals and are ready to expand their technical and performance skills.  They will study multiple dance techniques in depth and learn to embody more advanced dances.  Students will be given opportunities to choreograph their own dance pieces and they will perform in the Winter Dance concert.  Placement in this class is by audition and approval from the dance faculty.

CI Dance

(Full Year) This advanced level course is designed for students who have demonstrated a high technical ability and interest in dance and who are motivated to experience multiple dance techniques in depth. Ballet, modern dance, jazz and world dance forms,  improvisation and choreography are taught in “Creative I” dance classes. Guest choreographers are invited to set dance pieces for these advanced level classes. There is an emphasis on developing the students’ choreographic, technical and performance skills. Students will gain an appreciation of the historical and cultural roles that dance has played in every world culture. The Creative I dance classes will perform in the Spring Dance Concert. Placement in a Creative I dance class is by audition and approval of the Dance Faculty.

Choreographers workshop

(Full Year) This beginning level choreography course will introduce students to both the exploration of the choreographic process and the basic tools used for dance making. Students will learn through improvisation, class discussions, and have a chance to create their own dance works to help enhance movement freedom. No audition required.

DANCE Unlimited (Hip Hop/Step)

(Semester Based) This course provides an opportunity for dancers and emerging choreographers to express their passion for dance in a fun environment with the goal of performing. Students will work closely with dance teachers and outside guest choreographers to learn a repertoire of work to be performed at Glenfield events. Must be able to attend some after-school rehearsals.
