ELA Electives

Creative Writing

This course is an elective class that provides extra experience in writing for various audiences and purposes. Students will explore both traditional and more contemporary forms of writing. These include: stream of consciousness, persuasion, monologue, poetry, narrative, commercial advertising/demographic analysis, and press release/event planning/press conference. Creativity and originality will be strongly encouraged. Strategies will also be delivered to provide guidance in accuracy, organization, motivation, and improved mechanics.

Film and Literature

Film and Literature is a course aimed at students who enjoy reading and writing. It focuses on narratives that have been then made into film adaptations. Children will improve their ELA skills through class activities that focus on the key elements of a story and other literary concepts. Activities with be facilitated by the instructor and allow students to work in collaborative groups as well as independently. This course is open to students of all academic and grade levels.

African American Literature

This class will examine the development of African American history and culture through literary works encompassing an array of genres, including fiction, folktale, poetry, autobiography, music, and nonfiction. The main focus of this course will be primarily on topics of equity and social justice written by African American authors with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, past and present, who have influenced our society.

Journalism

Journalism is a course that is designed to foster critical thinking skills and analytical skills through journalistic writing. In this course, students will learn to gather information, organize ideas, and execute them for publication. This journalism course will also examine the historical development of the content and its role in modern society. It is a hands-on course that involves high energy and active participation of all students working under time constraints for writing deadlines.
