This course is designed for the beginning student of Chinese. The audio-lingual skills of listening and speaking receive major emphasis. Reading and writing of material mastered orally are begun. Cultural concepts are developed in relation to China and Chinese influence on life in the United States.

This intermediate course continues to emphasize the progressive development of the language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, students will continue to develop cultural concepts and understanding through independent research projects.

This course provides further development of the skills of aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. New basic language structures, additional vocabulary, idioms of high frequency and practical use are presented and practiced orally. Cultural patterns and customs related to China continue to be emphasized through extensive reading and discussion.
