FAQs:
What are unrestricted funds?
Funds that are not tied to any specific program or purpose. Projects can choose how funds are spent to support their mission. Examples include small contributions from individuals and grants that specify they are for general use. ie. general operating expenses
What are restricted funds?
Restricted funds are any donations made and earmarked for a specific purpose by the donor. Restrictions are placed on funds by their donors as stated on the award letter. Types of restrictions include time and purpose. Restricted funds are important since donors know and understand where their donations are going to. They also help fund specific programs and the IRS can service as accountability for the nonprofit. Examples of restricted funds:
A donor awards a $10,000 grant to support your back to school backpack giveaway
A foundation awards $40,000 over two year for general operational support
An individual gives $2,500 to pay for five students to participate in a program
This training approaches charitable fundraising through a movement building and political analysis lens. Fundraisers use many of the same skills as organizers and this training seeks to bring a power analysis lens to that work. Just as organizers utilize power and landscape analysis, we must also look at philanthropic actors as part of that landscape and how the ways in which your organization approaches fundraising can impact your programmatic work. How can we intercede into the traditional organizational management and decision making power that those with development connections and access generally hold over an organization's development?
