The flowers were important foods to the coastal peoples of british columbia. They were prepared along side with pacific silverweed roots. There are cleaned and then tied into fist sized bundles using one of the rhizomes as a tie. They are normally cooked in an underground pot, but sometimes were eaten raw. They also are dried for winter use, and they are still eaten today.

The flowers like growing next to small stream banks at moderately low elevations on mountains, coastal areas, and meadows.
They grow annually, and are perennial, which means they continually return.
