Overview of the English Language Curriculum
The English Language Department supports the school's Applied Learning Programme (ALP) which aims to develop students into effective communicators who are capable of articulating complex information and ideas in varying contexts and modes. To this end, programmes have been designed to make learning experiences meaningful and engaging for students. For more information on the skills that students acquire, and to view some of their projects, please visit the ALP webpage.
Highlights
Extensive Reading Programme
To inculcate a love for reading, time is set aside weekly for the students to engage in extensive reading.
Blind Date with a Book
Traditionally held to coincide with Valentine’s Day week, students are encouraged to make a ‘blind date’ with a book.
Roald Dahl Showdown
The enthusiasm was palpable as students engaged in quizzes centred around Roald Dahl’s stories.
Book Sale
The joy of stumbling upon a hidden gem or finding a long-awaited sequel was contagious among students.
Civic District Trail
Our Secondary Two ALP Tier 2 students stepped up to own the English Language Experiential Learning programme, playing the role if a tour guide for their peers. In fact, these students did more than bring their classmates around on the trail. They also shared interesting nuggets of information, prepared quizzes, and involved their peers in activities such as role-play and drawing. In response, our Secondary Two students listened with rapt attention, asked curious questions and gave their best for the various tasks our student-guides assigned them.
Overview of the English Literature Curriculum
The English Literature curriculum places a strong emphasis on critical reading skills, encouraging students to engage with texts and empathise with the experiences of others. To complement classroom learning, the curriculum integrates interesting experiences that bring the subject to live.
PRCS Literary Week
PRCS Literary Week is a platform for students to celebrate the power of words to inspire, connect, and transform. Through the myriad of activities that were planned, students had ample opportunities to explore the theme ‘Re-Connect’ before expressing their thoughts and emotions through the written word.
National Schools Literature Festival
Literature enthusiasts also participated in the National Schools Literature Festival. Through the various workshops and competitions that they took part in, students constructed their learning actively through discussions, thereby developing a deepened appreciation for the texts they have been engaging in.
Theatre Experiences
This year, lower and upper Secondary students were also treated to theatrical experiences that tackled issues with wit and insight.
