Our Vision is for every Crestian, physically educated to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
The PE department firmly believes that fundamental motor skills and core values serve as a solid foundation for fostering learning, active participation, and enjoyment in a diverse range of physical activities. During their 4 or 5 years at our school, students are exposed to a variety of 8 different sports, including football, netball, badminton, softball, basketball, volleyball, tchoukball, and floorball. This exposure enriches their educational journey, and we aspire for our students to carry forward an active lifestyle and continue engaging in these sports at recreational levels in adulthood. This aligns with Sports Singapore's Vision 2030, which encourages people to 'Live Better Through Sports.'
In addition, the department believes that PE is a platform to inculcate sound values, like integrity, respect and resilience, to build their character and infuse the students with 21st Century Competencies during their formative years. Routine are set, lessons are designed purposefully and teachable moments are seized to imbue the students with these values and competencies to prepare the students to face the challenges in life.
As part of the PE syllabus introduced in 2014, students also learn Outdoor Education (OE) and Physical Health and Fitness (PHF). These programs are designed to help students achieve the six key goals of physical education. Additionally, our Sec 2 and 4/5 students receive physical training to prepare them for the National Physical Fitness Assessment (NAPFA).
To further enrich the school experience, our students actively participate in various school events, including the annual Overcomers Run, interclass games, cheering competitions, Sports Education Programme, and experiential learning programme at Sports Hub.
OVERCOMERS RUN
The yearly Overcomers Run has the primary objective of fostering a healthy lifestyle among both students and staff and takes place at Pasir Ris Park. In the run-up to this event, students undergo dedicated training during their physical education lessons.
Beyond just enhancing their physical fitness, this training provides an opportunity for them to grasp the significance of values such as self-discipline, perseverance, and resilience, which are crucial in enabling them to successfully complete the 3.5km race. Parents are also warmly invited to join and bond with their children during the run.
CHEERING COMPETITION
The cheering competition is a distinctive programme of PRCS. Before this event, each class, along with their Home Tutors, dedicates time to collaborate and practise for the competition. Under the guidance of their fellow student leaders in the class, students gain experience in crafting a cheer routine lasting approximately 3 to 4 minutes, which they later perform as a unified class on stage.
Numerous creative cheers are developed by the students, incorporating synchronized physical movements, innovative lyrics, and the creative use of props. Throughout this creative journey, students acquire valuable teamwork skills, peer leadership capabilities, and enhance their ability to manage relationships effectively.
SEC 1 TO 4/5 INTER-CLASS GAMES (ICG)
The objectives of the ICG for Sec 1 to 4/5 students are to encourage mass participation in sports, provide a platform for classes to compete as a class and cheer for their class and promote healthy living. Students get the chance to play and compete in different sports, like floorball, softball, tchoukball, netball, badminton, that they have learnt during PE lessons. In the lead up to ICG, students learn to practise in their respective teams and strategise to form the optimal team for each sport.
Through the ICG, students learn to work as a team, support one another and pick up important values, like fair play, respect and care for team and school mates.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAMME AT SPORTS HUB
In a collaborative effort, Sec 1 students engaged in a team-based exploration of the Sports Hub using a race format, applying the knowledge they had acquired from their Outdoor Education module in an unfamiliar context. This experience allowed them to practise skills such as navigation and risk assessment.
Additionally, students had the opportunity to visit the sports museum, where they delved deeper into the role of sports in nation-building. Here, they gained insights into how sports can promote active and healthy lifestyles among Singaporeans, as well as the pivotal role played by the Sports Hub in inspiring greater participation in sports within the Singaporean community.
ALL CHILDREN EXERCISE SIMULTANEOULSY (ACES)
To encourage an active and healthy lifestyle for both students and staff, monthly ACES is conducted. During ACES, the entire school participates in a collective workout session, led by student leaders and accompanied by energizing music. These workouts are skillfully choreographed by our Crestian Senior Leaders (CSLs).
TEACHERS VS STUDENTS GAME (TSG)
As part of Staff Appreciation Week, a Teacher-Student game, such as Captain's Ball, is organized where graduating students engage in friendly competition with their teachers. This event aims to foster connections and strengthen the relationships between staff and students.
Sec 1 SPORTS EDUCATION PROGRAMME (SEP)
Utilizing the findings from the Sec 1 survey regarding their interests, PE department collaborates with service providers to deliver high-quality sports programs for the students. In recent years, activities, such as bowling, have been organized for students, with the goal of exposing them to these sports, enhancing their sports skills and knowledge while encouraging active participation in sports. Furthermore, we aspire to foster teamwork, character development, and a sustained interest in sports participation among our students through these programs.
Assessment Of Sports Module
Sec 1 to 3 secondary students are assessed for their skills and concepts using rubrics in the 6 sports module, namely football, netball, badminton, softball, basketball and volleyball. The rubrics are set up based on the learning outcomes of these sports. Students are assessed in an authentic setting or game-like situation.
Assessment for learning (Afl) are adopted during the curriculum and ongoing formative feedback are also given to the students throughout the 16-hour module to help the students to improve their skills and understanding of games concept. Peer assessments are also implemented for each sport to improve the skills of the students through the feedback given by their classmates. In addition, the students are also being assessed in their affective domain on participation during PE. The overall assessment, in PE grade, will be reflected in the student’s result slip at the end of each year. Based on the rubrics of teh Leraning Outcomes, qualitative feedback and suggested ways of improvement are also be given to the students to inform them of their understanding of the skills and concepts of the sports they learn by the end of Septemebr each year.
