Plot Structure: COMPLICATION

NOTES ON PLOT STRUCTURE: COMPLICATION

The complication is a situation or action that makes the original problem worse. It is not a new problem. The complication comes in the climax, just before the problem is solved. It should make the situation appear like it is impossible or very difficult to solve. It can be a small addition to the main problem or a sudden twist.

Example

Complication: The referee spots you playing without the right equipment.

Emotions:

Ben - Anxious, scared, regretful, guilty

Referee – angry

Coach – upset, angry

Adverbs:

Secretly, quietly, quickly
Immediately, suddenly

Speech:

“You! Get off the field now!” yelled the referee.

“Why did you do such a thing?” questioned the coach.

Thoughts:

I hope the referee doesn’t spot me. I must stay out of sight of the referee. I should not have broken the rules.
