Applied Learning Programme (ALP)
PROJECT S.H.I.N.E
Overview of Programme
Bedok South Secondary School adopts the Design Thinking framework to drive our Applied Learning Program. Under this program, we encourage our students from Secondary 1 to 3 to take an interest in solving real world problems around them. This interest is cultivated in many ways - from caring for and improving the school environment in Secondary 1 to building a sustainable environment in partnership with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Secondary 2 and culminating in selected students representing the school to take part in competitions in Secondary 3.
We aim to build young men and women who are innovative, effective communicators with a desire to create positive changes in society.
As the saying goes, ‘A picture speaks a thousand words’. Here are photos of our BDSians in action in the various exciting and enriching ALP experiences!

Secondary One Applied Learning Programme
Our Secondary One students were tasked with the important task of school improvement this year. Our students were immersed in app building skills workshops which they harnessed with creativity to build apps which support their peers to study, book consultations with teachers, encourage care and reporting estate matters in school and even facilities booking applications.

Secondary Two Applied Learning Programme
In this Edible Water Bottle Workshop, our Secondary 2 students' creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking skills were honed through an activity where students make their own edible water bottles and learn about ways to help and preserve the environment by eliminating plastic. This gave students the opportunity to explore possibilities to find a remedy for environmental problems triggered by plastic.

SHINE Marketplace Showcase (Secondary Two)
The 2-year design thinking journey of our students culminates into the SHINE Marketplace in Secondary 2. Students put up their prototypes and open up their classrooms to fellow schoolmates and teachers to view and interact with their prototypes. They get the chance to pitch their ideas to their friends and teachers.
At the end of the Marketplace, students and teachers will get the chance to vote for the best presenter, prototype and the best team who put in hard work to develop their prototype throughout the year.

Talent Management Programme (Secondary Three)
A partnership programme with MOE Gifted Education Branch for selected Secondary 3 students, this provides students who have an interest in innovation an opportunity to further develop their problem-solving and inventive skills.
Students journeyed through the Design Thinking process under teacher mentors in the Design Challenges (Towards an Inclusive and Caring City / Towards a Sustainable and Liveable City / Towards Uplifting the Base of the Pyramid), which included experiences such as virtual learning journeys with 3M Singapore and Temasek Polytechnic, and guidance from an external mentor, a senior lecturer from Singapore Polytechnic. Two of our students’ projects obtained the Certificate of Merit while the other clinched the Certificate of Distinction and was shortlisted for showcase at this year’s virtual Young Innovator’s Fair.

National Youth Upcycling Movement (NYUM) 2022
As part of the post-exam activities, students participated in the National Youth Upcycling Movement (NYUM) once again this year to inspire them to take action in the sustainability movement through learning about plastic waste and how to upcycle plastic milk cartons into a pencil case.
