What does a School Counselor do?

The short answer.....a lot!

A School Counselor wears many hats every day, but ultimately I am present to support both students and staff. The role is much different from the days of Guidance Counselors, as the focus no longer rests solely in guiding students toward well-suited vocations. The three developmental domains School Counselors focus on today are Academic, Social-Emotional and Career. I work as an advocate in meeting the needs of every student and I collaborate with staff, families and other counseling professionals while using my leadership role to promote and accomplish systemic change in our school.

As a school leader I am involved in many teams and committees for a variety of reasons. It is important that these teams be multi-disciplinary, including team members serving in different roles throughout the school and district, as it allows our staff to tackle problems and understand students from a more comprehensive view.
