Everyone experiences hardships and can use assistance and support sometimes. These are just a few resources in the greater Spokane area that you might find useful for those times when you are searching for a helping hand.
First Call for Help (877.266.1818) - Frontier Behavioral Health provides over-the-phone intervention and community information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, regardless of age, race, culture or insurance coverage. Trained volunteers, under the supervision of professional staff, are available any time, day or night, to provide: Supportive listening, immediate assistance to people in emotional crises, access to crisis response services and/or mental health services and confidential services in a caring manner.
Children's Home Society of Washington - An experienced team that works with families on difficult behaviors, relationships, school, foster care, painful emotions, traumatic events and more. Services they offer include counseling, case management, group therapy and parenting classes using evidence-based practices for children ages birth through twenty-one. Hospice of Spokane, "Connections" - A grief support group designed for those who have experienced a loss through death. All groups are facilitated by bereavement counselors and there is no charge to attend groups. Support groups run for youth (ages 6-15) and adults, and generally last six weeks. Friends for Children - A non-profit organization based in Medical Lake that provides needy children with the opportunity to participate in community activities, sports, educational experiences (including college/technical school scholarships) and other recreational programs. Support is also provided to families in case of a disaster, those in need of help during the holidays and charitable organizations/projects. Contact them by phone at 509.299.9175.
2nd Harvest - The organization that distributes a majority of supplies to our local food banks, whose mission it is to bring community resources together to feed people in need. There are 21 locations in the Spokane area, the closest being Airway Heights Baptist Church which is open from 10am-12pm on the first and third Saturday of every month. Airman & Family Readiness Center (AFRC) - Helps military families prepare for any kind of demand, throughout activation, mobilization, deployment and beyond. A few specific services that they can help with include moving, emergency financial assistance, voting assistance and free counseling. Family Advocacy (FA) - A program that addresses the familial and interpersonal aspects of daily living. They work to prevent domestic abuse with classes, workshops, and seminars, a new parent support program, counseling and public awareness campaigns. Family Advocacy also works to ensure the safety of victims and helps families overcome the effects of violence and change destructive behavior patterns. Fairchild Food Pantry - A non-profit food bank run by volunteers and open to Airmen of all ranks and families on Fairchild AFB. They have non-perishable foods, diapers, wipes and paper products regularly stocked by on-base donors. Service members do not require a referral in order to receive assistance and families can visit once per pay period. They are open Tuesday and Thursday from 11am-1pm, Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30pm and the first Saturday of every month from 11am-1pm. Visit the food pantry in Room 310 of the Depot (building 2447).
Military & Family Life Counseling (MFLC) - Licensed counselors who are available to assist military families facing unique challenges and issues. They are a free, anonymous and confidential support to service members and their families, providing up to 12 free counseling sessions per issue. Exceptional Family Member Program (EMFP) - A family support program that assists families in finding the resources they need for any physical, emotional, developmental or intellectual disability that requires special treatment, therapy or education. They provide a variety of personnel, medical and family support services including information and referral, parent training and support groups. Tutor.com - Although a resource for anyone, Tutor.com also has a specific program that provides free online tutoring services to eligible service members and their families. Their tutoring can also be done live, on-demand via a secure classroom connection with tutors who have extensive background checks and educational training (certified teachers, university professors, grad students, etc.). They do not ask for background data on the person they are tutoring so no personal information is shared between the tutor and student. There are also services such as allowing tutors to be selected as "favorites" so that they can be found again if the tutoring session was especially helpful, an online locker to store assignments/projects/homework and an app for easy use on Apple phones and tablets.
