SEL Standards

In 2016, a Washington State Workgroup addressed social-emotional learning (SEL) for K-12 students and created 3 "Self" Standards and 3 "Social" Standards. These are important to facilitating student development and success in school but without a guiding elementary focus it is difficult to determine what we want them to know. Therefore, I condensed the Washington State SEL standards into three standards for our students at MAE that will serve as a guide for the lessons students receive each year. As a School Counselor, I am also still committed to looking to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success as I create classroom lessons. For more information on each of these, I have provided links to their respective sites below.

The Social-Emotional Learning Standards at MAE are as follows:

1) Students will be able to identify their own emotions and empathize with the emotions of others.

2) Students will be able to manage their own emotions and behaviors to make safe and constructive choices with and around others.

3) Students will be able to show a Growth Mindset while also positively engaging in their classroom and school community.

Our work in classroom lessons adheres to these SEL Standards in a way that is developmentally appropriate for each grade level, and the lesson schedule allows for me to work with students on college & career readiness and citizenship, two equally important facets of student growth. It is my goal that while students build their knowledge and skill around these standards that they are also learning important strategies which will help them to be successful along the way. I would encourage all parents and guardians to find time to ask your student(s) about these standards and lesson content throughout the year!
