2021-22

After nearly a 5-year break, Michael Anderson Elementary restarted the Associated Student Body during the winter of the 2021-22 school year thanks in large part to the courage and teamwork of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade student leaders who were involved. Together, the ASB were able to run many new and returning student programs and activities for the school body:

Kindness in Dorms is an initiative opportunity presented to Michael Anderson by one of the Air Force MSgts with a simple focus of providing joy and cheer to all Airmen living in dorms on Fairchild AFB. The ASB worked together to lead a schoolwide campaign and organize two deliveries to the Airmen between February and June, and we look forward to continuing this base community partnership.

Along with the help and guidance of Mrs. Harris (3rd grade teacher), several student leaders coordinated monthly student drawings representative of our PACE character traits. Every month they interviewed the artist and then recognized them alongside one student from each grade level for their coloring creativity.

Many student leaders assisted Mr. Sammons in teaching both soccer and kickball to students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. ASB students were examples of good sportsmanship as they coached teams and problem-solved with younger students.

Michael Anderson had three big decorations throughout the school year, and the ASB helped to plan and coordinate two of them: Winter Wonderland and President's Day. We love bringing laughter and joy into the building, and decorating hallways and classroom doors is one of our favorite ways to do it.

Literacy Week this year was our all-out school decoration with a shout out to our paraprofessionals for the time they put into transforming the hallways, but it was our student leaders who made BINGO happen with their collective willingness to give up their playing time in order to support our younger students during the school wide game. The ASB were great helpers in all Kindergarten and 1st Grade classrooms.

Every April we recognize military kids for the ways they serve alongside their parents, and Purple Up! is one way to celebrate by wearing purple to show our support. The ASB designed hallway posters to promote Purple Up! day and we had incredible participation among both staff and students.

In addition to all this, not only did the ASB do an amazing job of modeling good character and citizenship to our student body but they also worked diligently to plan an outline of our ASB student government for years to come. They agreed on term limits and officer responsibilities, and put together a comprehensive list of other yearly programs and activities to run in service of the school community and beyond. As the ASB Advisor, I owe them a great deal of gratitude for their service and for making my job a lot more fun (and easier too!). Next school year we look forward to expanding the time that student leaders can serve and the number of service opportunities provided.
