Every year I work with all 1st-5th grade students during monthly classroom lessons teaching social-emotional learning. It's a big part of my job as the School Counselor. As a class, students participate in conversation and activities that help them meet their grade-level standards as determined by the breakdown of MAE's three SEL Standards. However, our last school year was cut short in the building due to Covid-19 and SEL lessons were discontinued for the Spring. All students were working hard toward meeting their social-emotional goals and staying organized and responsible for their learning (Growth Mindset folders!) but were ultimately unable to finish the lessons pertaining to the final standard. I have, however, kept all student work from last school year and will be returning it to students to have moving forward. But I'm going to call last year a wash because I want both students and myself to start fresh this year, whatever comes our way. I will be recording and posting videos for students to participate in during the year as long as I need to make them available online. These videos will be much shorter than a typical classroom lesson but will contain SEL content to help every student continue to grow. If you are new to our school community or weren't aware of what we did last year, please hop back to last year's 2019-20 tab to read more about the focus and lesson schedule, learning targets and performance scales. Otherwise, or when you're ready, please click on the link below to take you to the grade-level page for your student(s) where all videos will be posted at the start of every month throughout the year!
So, this year didn't go quite as planned! I didn't get very far into video lessons, but thank you to all the students and parents who followed along for the first two months. Those videos are still available online with the links provided above if you would like to go back and view them at anytime. Although we started with most students in virtual learning from home, we were also supervising the online learning of many students in the building. Then as soon as grade levels began returning to in-person learning I started teaching lessons in Kindergarten and 1st Grade and then branched out to teach only a few lessons with grades 2 through 5 before the end of the school year. What a year this was and there is so much that I have learned along the way. My goal is to return to monthly lessons for all students in the Fall of 2021 and to continue our work with MAE's SEL Standards.Â
