K, W, L

Visible Learning Strategy - K, W, L- KWL charts help students to be active thinkers while they read, giving them specific things to look for and having them reflect on what they learned when they are finished reading . This strategy can be modified (The K, W, and the L) to meet the needs of the students or the learning activity at hand.

K-W-L is an acronym that stands for “Know,” “Want to Know,” and “Learned.” The KWL chart is divided into three columns—one for each letter—under which students record:

  1. What they already know about the topic

  2. What they want to know (or questions they have) about the topic

  3. What they learned (after the lesson or assignment)

KWL charts are effective tools for engaging students in the learning process, helping them recall knowledge, and tracking their learning progress. While they are often used to help students improve their reading comprehension, KWL charts can be applied to any topic or lesson.

KWL: Bravery

Using KWL with Positivity Project Character Traits is a Social / Emotional Entry Point that will allow for skill isolation with low stakes practice BEFORE doing it with content.

We can Modify the traditional K, W, L columns to make this a more rigorous or more differentiated learning experience for some students.

Add an S column at the end of the KWL chart for students to note what they still want to learn about the topic.

Add an I column to list why this information is important.

Add an F column to the list where they found this information to create a resource list.

Add an R column to list something they want to remember.
