6Elm      Learning Update

Central idea: Exploration leads to discoveries, opportunities and new understandings.

We had such a lovely start to the week when we welcomed mothers in for our Mother's Day celebrations on Monday morning!  We also had a virtual author visit on Wednesday, where the children learnt about the creation of the fiction text 'Moonflight' by Gill Lewis.

We have continued along our second line of inquiry by thinking about life under the rule of the British Empire, considering the impact that colonisation had on native people.  The children have explored the size of the Empire at its peak and how some languages, cultures and religions were affected by the overseas ruling of territories.

In maths, we have been recapping converting fractions to add and subtract them.  This includes converting mixed numbers to improper fractions in order to subtract, as well as adding mixed numbers by finding the lowest common denominator.  We have also been encouraging the children to use TT Rockstars as much as they can at home to support their times tables knowledge and we hope that they have enjoyed participating in the LAT TT Rockstars competition this week!

In science, we learnt about heredity and thought about the traits and characteristics that we have inherited as opposed to the ones that we have learnt.
