6Elm Learning Update

Central idea: Identity and thinking can be influenced by the media

We have had another busy week in 6 Elm and the children have worked very hard to wrap up our first module of learning! As a part of our Geography learning, we looked at local OS maps and learned how to read the scale and understand the distance. Using the scale, the children calculated how many kilometres it was from one local point of interest to another. We then went on to think about latitude and longitude, and in particular, locating the Arctic circle and the countries that are a part of it. The class were thrilled to be able to use the maps and are keen to be able to put their map skills to use again, very soon.

We have also been thinking about bullying and discrimination in our PSHE lesson. The children verbalised what they perceived as bullying and thought of strategies people could use in certain situations. We linked this to the main character in Pig Heart Boy, as the children discussed the issues that he has faced as a result of his disability. We have had some very thoughtful discussions and the class was very thoughtful in putting themselves in Cam's shoes and understanding the consequences of people's words or actions.

I hope that all of the children have a restful break and I look forward to seeing them all back in Module 2.
