Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an in-school academic support program that prepares students for university eligibility and success. The AVID elective class is intended to be an elective choice for all four years of a student’s high school career. AVID places identified students in a rigorous curriculum and gives them the support to succeed therein. The AVID curriculum focuses on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR) and includes specific strategies for note taking, test preparation, and research. The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial support and motivational activities.

AVID I

Course Description: AVID is an academic program that prepares students from all family backgrounds for successful entry into four-year colleges and universities. AVID concentrates on study skills, time management and foundations necessary for college success. All students enrolled in AVID will prepare for and take the PSAT, SAT, and/or ACT. AVID students must be willing to enroll in at least one Pre AP or AP course. Students must apply for admission into the AVID. Students may receive up to four state elective credits for HS AVID enrollment.

AVID II

Course Description: The AVID elective class prepares students in the academic middle for college eligibility and success. Students receive instruction in writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading strategies in addition to note-taking and organizational skills that are necessary for academic success. AVID students must enroll in at least one Pre-AP or AP course in addition to the AVID elective class. Tutors are provided during the AVID class to support student success in all courses. AVID IV -Senior Seminar will provide particular instruction and support in all aspects of the college application and admission process.

SPORTS MEDICINE

GRADE LEVEL: 10-12 CREDIT: 1

Course Description: A two semester, lecture based course where students interested in sport and health care related fields will learn basic first aid, injury prevention, injury evaluation, injury evaluation, injury rehabilitation, athlete health issues, basic anatomy, training room administration, and about potential careers in the Sports Medicine field. This course will require some after school time to interact with athletes and athletic trainers in the athletic training room. This class is highly recommended for those interested in being part of the student Athletic Training Program.

Course Description: Sports Medicine II is the field study of sports medicine and athletic training that is offered to students wishing to learn about sports medicine careers. This course will expand a student’s knowledge about, but not limited to, sport injuries, sport psychology, sport nutrition, and professional responsibilities.

Course Description: The Path-College/Career Prep courses advance intellectual curiosity, conscientiousness, dependability, emotional stability, and perseverance through tasks that foster deeper levels of thinking and reasoning in the four core content areas. Path courses focus on developing the habits and skills that are expected in college study and the workforce.

GT Interdisciplinary Studies Mentor Seminar I-IV

PREREQUISITE: Must be MISD identified GT student and have campus/district approval for mentor.

Course Description: This course is based on the required, exit level Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) for gifted and talented (G/T) learners; it offers a non-traditional learning experience to students who have the ability to create innovative products or performances. Students will develop a product proposal, compile a portfolio, conduct in-depth research, be matched with a mentor from the business or professional community, and prepare for a public presentation of their product or performance at the end of the school year. An audience that includes expert(s) in the field will evaluate the product or performance. Student work with their mentor to create a related product with real-world application and tangible documentation.

The final product will be shared with an audience outside the school setting.

Description: This new state-wide innovative course is the 2nd course in the Principles of Information Technology Program of Study. Course designed for scholars to analyze and assess current trends in a fast-growing STEM career field that creates meaningful and compelling experiences for users of an array of information products, services, and or initiatives of companies and organizations. Students will gain knowledge of introductory observation and research skills; basic design thinking and applied methodologies; collaborative problem-solving and ideation; and interaction design and solution development
