Course Description: English II Pre-AP emphasizes critical analytical skills in preparation for AP curriculum and exams and post-secondary education. Emphasis is placed on persuasive forms of writing such as logical arguments, expressions of opinion, and personal forms of writing. Students will read extensively in multiple genres from world literature such as selected short stories, dramas, novels, poetry, and mythologies originally written in English or translated to English from multiple cultures.

Emphasis is placed on business forms of writing such as the report, the narrative of a procedure, the summary or abstract, and the résumé. English III students read extensively in multiple genres from American literature and other world literature. PSAT/SAT preparation rounds out the instructional year.

This two-semester, six-credit writing intensive sequence features a fall RHE 306 “Research & Writing” course in argumentation that situates rhetoric as an art of civic discourse, followed by the spring semester RHE 309K “Rhetoric of American Identity” featuring an exciting series of case studies in race, gender, and ethnicity. Students analyze the various positions held in any public debate and learn to advocate their own positions effectively. Students enrolled in On-Ramps Rhetoric and Writing should be prepared for college level reading and writing assignments and an expectation of collaboration and contribution to projects and critical thought.

AP ENGLISH III: LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION

This course can take the place of English IV. High school students that require or request additional honing of the study skills, especially as the students prepare for the demands of college, may enroll in the College Readiness and Study Skills course. In this course, students acquire techniques for learning from texts, including studying word meanings, identifying and relating key ideas, drawing and supporting inferences, and reviewing study strategies. In all cases, interpretations and understandings will be presented through varying forms, including thorough use of available technology. Students accomplish many of the objectives through wide reading as well as use of content texts in preparation for post-secondary schooling.

Course Description: This course, an elective composition course, provides individual instruction for the motivated writer in an intensive writers’ workshop environment. This writing course is designed especially to challenge the imagination and creativity of the student by encouraging spontaneity of expression.
