A PROTAGONIST is defined in Encyclopaedia Britannica as "the principal character in a novel, story, or drama" and "in ancient Greek drama, the first or leading actor" ("Protagonist").
In other words, a protagonist is the main character of a story. The protagonist drives the plot and is central to the story's events.
Some key characteristics of a protagonist are the following:
1) they are the central force of a story
2) they move the story forward
3) they battle with their rival - the antagonist
