Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia, sometimes referred to as a figure of sound, refers to outside noises that are made up into words.

What's interesting about this term is that for the same sound, there will be different interpretations of it depending on where you live. For instance, Czechs usually say "hej" in order to make someone notice them. In the UK with people of varying accents, some could prefer saying "Oi" instead of the similar "Hey". A better example could be the sound of water droplets. Czechs would go with "kap" but an English-speaking person would probably interpret the drop of water as "drip".
