Mario Klarer in his book An Introduction to Literary Studies defines a flashback as “a device in structuring plot which introduces events from the past in an otherwise linear narrative” (Klarer 139). The opposite of flashback is a flash-forward, in other words foreshadowing of future events.
Whether it is a vivid memory or a dream sequence, the main purpose of a flashback scene is to provide background information which can help readers to better understand present-day elements or get more detailed information about characters.
Here are some other functions of flashbacks:
stir up a plot
add depth to characters
add tension to the plot
shock or concern readers with secrets (What Is Flashback in Literature?).
As for literature, a flashback can be found in Chapter 17 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Using their psychic connection, Harry Potter sees a memory from Voldemort's perspective of the night Voldemort killed Harry’s parents and tried to murder Harry. J. K. Rowling uses a whole range of flashbacks in the series of Harry Potter to give us clues and background (Captivating Flashback Examples in Literature).
Another example of a flashback may be a scene from Disney’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas. A Grinch’s adopted parents explain why he doesn’t like Christmas in a flashback to his childhood. Moreover, this scene makes him a sympathetic character as he has been bullied and outcast for being different (Flashback: Definition and Examples).
