According to Britannica, fiction in literature is created by authors imagination, is not factual, though it might be based on true events or situations. Types of literature in the fiction genre include the novel, short story, and novella. The etymology of the word comes from the Latin fictiō, “the act of making, fashioning, or molding.”
Subgenres in fiction
The genre of fiction is exceptionally wide ranged and includes variety of subgenres such as fantasy, science fiction, metafiction, dystopian, adventure, romance, mystery, horror, historical, young adult etc. Examples of subgenres in fiction listed below.
Science Fiction
Science fiction, or sci-fi is literary genre, in which the action is set in the near future. Although the plot is made up, it often derives from factual events and is often based on actual scientifically accurate data and findings. The best-known sci-fi authors are Jules Verne, Arthur Charles Clark, Isaac Asimov or Herbert George Wells.
Fantasy
Unlike science fiction, the genre of fantasy has no scientifical background and the action often takes place in made-up historical settings. The plot, settings and characters are completely up to authors fantasy, as the name itself suggests. It often depicts mythical creatures such as dragons, mermaids, ogres etc.
Best-known fantasy authors are John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, George Raymond Richard Martin, Joane Rowling, Andrzej Sapkowski or Terry Pratchett.
