Texas During the Civil War and Reconstruction

1861-1876

When Texas was annexed to the United States, it entered as a "Slave State" and would join the Confederacy when seceding from the US in 1861. The war that would follow was the result of issues with states rights, tariffs and an idea of "sectionalism" that divided the United States. What contributions would Texans make to the war effort? How did a state on the edge of the "western frontier" benefit from this conflict, seemingly, fought so far away? The impacts of the Civil War are examined in this UNIT along with the progression of the abolitionists movement to end slavery.
