Exploration and Early European Colonization of Texas

1519-1821

The first Europeans to settle what is now Texas, were searching for gold, silver and other resources as a part of their early explorations. They would use the "mission system" to try to establish settlements in various regions of Texas. Many missions were established in Texas in order to try and convert the local natives to Catholicism and promote settlement. This endeavor would be complicated by various raiding tribes, lack of resources and isolation from the main political hubs of the Spanish empire that stretched all the way to South America.
