Attendance*

Regular school attendance is directly linked to a positive school experience and the academic success for each of our students. It is equally important to be on time each day. Students who are frequently absent or tardy often fall behind in learning. Students on an Inter-district or Intra-district agreement may be dis-enrolled for numerous absences or tardies. If possible, please schedule appointments so that they do not conflict with instruction time. If your child has an appointment that requires him/her to leave school early, please send a note or telephone the office staff prior to the appointment. Students will be called from class when a parent or guardian has arrived at school as we do not want to interrupt valuable instruction time. Students will not be released to anyone other than the parents/and or guardians, unless prior authorization has been given by the parents. All students must be signed out in the office prior to leaving school grounds. Office staff may request picture identification from an adult picking up a child during the school day.

Student Illness*

Every year a number of students become ill for many reasons, including exposure to other ill children in the classroom. To help you make decisions about whether or not to keep your child home, we have put together a list of indicators to help you to decide. A child should not be in school and may be sent home if the following condition(s) are present:

  1. Fever of 100 degrees or higher. A child should be fever-free before returning to school.
  2. Rash with fever illness, such as chicken pox or measles
  3. Vomiting or diarrhea.
  4. If conjunctivitis or “pink eye” is diagnosed, the child must be on medication for 24 hours before returning to school.
  5. Head lice – a child must remain at home until treated with medicated lice shampoo and no live bugs are present.

Absences*

If your child will not be attending school on any given day, please report the absence via the school website (school attendance link) or telephone the school on the day of the absence. Illness, medical appointments and bereavement are the only reasons for an excused absence. All other absences are considered “unexcused”. If attendance for the full school day is not possible, we appreciate the effort extended in having your child attend any portion of the day. If your child has more than five excused absences, the school may need to request a doctor’s verification of illness. Please contact the school office if you believe that your child will have an on-going health concern. If a student accumulates three (3) unexcused absences of more than thirty (30) minutes on three (3) occasions in one (1) school year, that student must be reported as a truant and the parent must be notified (Education Code 48205(b) and Education Code Section 48260.5). Students who are excessively absent or tardy may be referred to the School Attendance Review Board. Referral to this board may result in a home visit by child protective agencies or local law enforcement. The Placer County District Attorney’s Office may be notified in the event of habitual truancy. Please work with the school to see that your child attends every day.

Absence Reporting*

Any absence not cleared by the student’s parent/guardian within 72 hours will be treated as an unexcused absence.

Tardies*

When students are late for school, they must check in at the office before going to class. Please consider that when students walk in late, they are disrupting the entire class.

Make up Work*

Make up work should only be requested when a student is absent from school for two or more days. Please contact your child’s teacher with your homework request so they may have adequate time to prepare materials. Your child’s teacher will allow a reasonable period of time to complete make up assignments missed due to excused absences.

Independent Study*

Families are encouraged to plan trips/vacations around the school calendar. For students to participate in Independent Study at the school site, they must be absent for 5 or more consecutive days. Requests for Independent Study contracts must be submitted to the school office at least 5 days in advance. The Independent Study contract and all student work are due the day the student returns to school. Independent study may be denied if your child has excessive absences and/or tardies or previous Independent Study contracts have been incomplete. Incomplete Independent Study contracts result in unexcused absences for your child. Note: Independent Study Contracts will not be approved during the first two weeks of school or the last two weeks of school (except for an extenuating circumstance that has been approved by the school principal)
