Physical education is an important part of the total education experience. Physical education is required for all pupils by New York State Education Law and the regulations of the Commissioner of Education. Each pupil is required to successfully complete physical education for each year of high school attendance. One half credit will be earned for each successful year of high school physical education. Two credits of physical education are required for high school graduation. All courses will be conducted to meet the skill level of each class. It is expected that each pupil will participate in class to the best of his or her ability and that sufficient effort will be exerted to enable the student to achieve optimal progress toward all program requirements. Students will participate in a wide variety of activities including team sports, fitness activities, individual sports, lifetime sports, and aquatics. Aquatics are required for all students housed in the main building of the high school.

The Physical Education curriculum integrates a variety of sport and recreational movement experiences. These experiences serve to introduce students to new activities as well as reinforce previous learning experiences. The Physical Education department uses a mixture of activities as a means of adding to students’ physical activity options that could be pursued into adulthood. The Physical Education department wants to encourage student choice and improve student interest and motivation, by allowing students to choose from a variety of course offerings. All students must earn two credits of Physical Education to earn a diploma.
Some of the PE course offerings include:
Team sports - basketball, flickerball, flag football, floor hockey, soccer, tchoukball, team handball, ultimate frisbee, and volleyball.
Racquet sports - badminton, pickleball, ping pong and tennis.
Fitness activities - group fitness classes, strength training, walking, and yoga.
Other Activities - bocce ball, capture the flag, corn hole, four square, ladder ball, self defense.
Swimming - 9th and 10th grade. This includes water safety.
Bowling - 11th and 12th grade.
***10-12th graders only: Student Athletes that participate in at least two full seasons of interscholastic athletics during the 2023-2024 school year may use their interscholastic athletic participation to replace Physical Education for the 2024-2025 school year. Students who replace their PE with this option will be awarded a "Pass" on their transcript.
Students who choose this replacement plan may be assigned to an additional study hall during the time they would have attended Physical Education.
