Graduation requirements for all LHS students include 1 credit in Art and/or Music. This requirement may be satisfied by the successful completion of any of the following course options:
1. Studio in Art
2. Any 1‐credit music course except Performing Arts 1 and 2
3. 1 credit technology: Design and Drawing for Production or Design and Drawing for Production/PLTW
The art classes at LHS offer students hands-‐on learning activities that nurture visual literacy skills vital for the 21st century. Art students develop observational skills, critical thinking skills, creative problem solving skills, and cultural awareness necessary to be successful in our global society. The value of art and design to innovation is clear: Artists and designers humanize technology, making it understandable and usable for changes in society. The tools and methods of a studio-‐based education offer new models for creative problem solving and flexible thinking necessary in today’s complex and dynamic world.

This half year craft based art course is intended for the student who is interested in the creative process of functional art. Students will learn about functional art that is created for use, designed to serve a purpose and with an aesthetic in mind. We will explore craft and design from different cultures while creating works of art like jewelry, wearable art, stained glass, or ceramics. Students will get to experience working with a variety of different mediums such as clay, fabric, metal, wood, glass and fibers, while learning multiple studio techniques.

Do you love video games, stories, and movies? Have you ever thought about creating artwork for them? In this class, students will design characters, environments, monsters, architecture, etc. for video games and film. They will also work to develop single illustrations for products such as book covers, trading card games, children’s books and more. Students will explore and build endless concepts for the entertainment marketplace while utilizing cutting edge technology like Huion Tablets, iPads, Adobe Photoshop, and ProCreate.

In this class you will build on your knowledge and skills from years prior. You will have the freedom of creating your own proposed projects and developing your skillset with the media of your choosing. We will be particularly focused on business aspects of a professional artist. Specific career choices, how to earn income, and marketing strategies will be regularly discussed topics. Overall, it is the goal of this class to better prepare you for thriving as a professional creator in the real world.

This exciting art course is for students who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and work with their hands. Students will be building clay vessels, sculptures and other works of art, while learning hand-‐building and wheel-‐throwing techniques. Before enrolling in this course, most students have little to no prior clay experience but are able to quickly build skills.

This art course is for students who would like to continue to build skills in the ceramic medium. Students will solve challenging problems in clay using a variety of hand building and wheel throwing techniques. Students will create works of art with a specific theme of their choice, using functional and non-‐functional approaches.

Students will be using the most cutting edge digital drawing devices to create artwork on the computer and mobile tablets. Learn design strategies and digital trickery to help take your artwork to the next level in this fully digital art course.

In this course you will explore what you want to communicate about yourself or the world around you. Through your art you will develop ideas from observation, learning how to draw what you see. In the second half of the year those observational skills give you the visual vocabulary to create quality works based on your imagination or from fantasy. Students will use a variety of wet and dry art materials, learning how to control the art media to support your vision. Strong drawing and painting skills allow art students to succeed in all other areas of art and design.

This course is a “must” if you have any interest in pursuing an art or design related field. Second year drawing and painting students develop more expertise with a variety of media and continue to explore story, metaphor and meaning in your art. Building on your knowledge of various art media you will explore more multimedia work where you combine materials in a creative way. Artwork created in this course will improve your portfolio for college admission.

Learn how artists make extraordinary images. Our technology, media and culture depend more on artistic images than ever before. While anyone can take a photograph, students in this course learn to use the camera creatively and technically. They learn about lighting, composition and editing. More importantly, students learn to think, see and work like a professional artist. Throughout the course, students are assigned digital photographic assignments to be taken outside of the school day and outdoors in ideal lighting conditions.

Experimental developing, advanced lighting techniques, and field trip experiences challenge the beginning photographer. This course allows students to explore black and white, color, and digital photography, while encouraging students to develop a photographic portfolio. Not only will students be advancing their photography knowledge they will also be expanding their conceptual creativity as well. It is necessary for students to have access to a digital camera.

This exciting course is designed for seniors who want to continue to explore the creative process at the college level. Students will work two-‐dimensionally to communicate what they observe and to communicate messages and meaning in their art. They will evolve their "voice" as an artist. Artists will investigate the use of a variety of art media including pencil, charcoal, ink, pastel, watercolor, acrylic paint, and printing to depict spatial relationships, proportion, scale, and composition. The portfolio of work created in this course can be used to demonstrate creativity and drawing necessary for entrance into art and architectural programs in college. Upon successful completion of this full year course, students earn 3 credits from SUNY Oswego, which may be transferable under the guidelines of the receiving institution.
Note: The fee for this course is $175 for the 3 credits students will earn. There is a reduced rate for families participating in the Free and Reduced School Lunch Program.
