The importance of health education has never been greater. Knowledge gained in Health Education affects attitudes and, consequently, behaviors. This course focuses on the relationship that exists among physical, mental, and social health. Students learn that their decisions affect all of the areas of health and that these decisions can have consequences in life, now and in the future. The curriculum covers the traditional health topics as mandated by the New York State Board of Regents, as well as current health issues of local and national concern. Note: Successful completion of this course is required for graduation.

PERSONAL SAFETY/ONONDAGA COMMUNITY COLLEGE (HFA 203 and HFA 204)

OCC Personal Safety is a one semester, one-half credit Health Education elective developed to provide instruction in CPR, the use of an AED (automatic external defibrillator) and First Aid techniques. Students who successfully complete the CPR/AED portion of this course will receive American Heart Association certification (BLS Provider) and OCC/ HFA 204 credit (1 credit). The format for the First Aid component will include principles of basic First Aid. An additional AHA certification (Heartsaver First Aid) can be earned in the second half of the course as well as OCC/HFA 203 (2 credits). The nature of this course is highly experiential and the majority of the course work will be completed in class which means participation and attendance are mandatory (OCC requires 80% attendance for certification). This class is open to students in grades 10-12. A $10 laboratory/certification fee is required.

LIFETIME NUTRITION AND WELLNESS

This course is a one semester, 1/2 credit health education elective which covers various dimensions of wellness in order to increase ready-to-use skills as well as knowledge for adulthood. The content includes: fad diets, meal planning, fitness planning, environmental health, time management, mindset, occupational interests, and social influences on health. 

HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS AND SEXUALITY

Required Course Materials: Notebook, pen or pencil, class folder or small binder

This course is a one semester, 1⁄2 credit health education elective. Using a seminar style format, this course will help students examine social, emotional, legal, physical, and historical aspects of human relationships. Teaching strategies for this class will include: lecture, cooperative units, library research, and guest speakers. Evaluation will be based upon student participation, class and individual project work. Note: Parent permission is required for those students wishing to enroll in this course.

MODIFIED HEALTH EDUCATION

This course is designed to accommodate students with disabilities who may require specific adaptations in order to demonstrate acquisition, recall, understanding, and application of Health Education content, skills and related life skills. The primary purpose of this course is to provide students with disabilities a means of making progress towards the achievement of the NYS and National Health Standards. Modified Health will offer opportunities to learn life skills in an environment conducive to each student’s needs.
