Graduation requirements for all LHS students include one credit in Art and/or Music. This requirement may be satisfied by the successful completion of any of the following course options: 1. Concert Band is an instrumental ensemble for students who have had previous experience in a middle or high school band program. To enter Concert Band, students should be in good standing with their middle school band, audition for the Concert Band Director, and have a positive attitude towards improving their abilities on their instrument. The Concert Band performs a wide variety of literature that focuses on the development of ensemble technique. Students are required to participate in all after school rehearsals and in all performances scheduled for the Concert Band. Note: All members must take one in-school sectional lesson per week in addition to band rehearsals.

Note: All members must attend in–school sectional lessons weekly in addition to band rehearsals.

Prospective members should be young musicians who have begun to take his/her musical participation seriously. Good practice habits are expected along with an appreciation of fine music. Students are required to participate in all after school rehearsals and in all performances scheduled for the Symphonic Band. Note: All members must take one in–school sectional lesson in addition to band rehearsals.

Prerequisite: One year of private instruction

Students taking music lessons on all instruments and voice outside of school may receive 1/2 unit of credit. The private music lesson must be 1/2 hour per week and the student must practice at least 45 minutes per day to receive this credit. This credit is dependent upon receiving these lessons from a qualified private teacher and an examination given by the music department. Forms are available from Mr. Hobel-Furrer. The request must be submitted in September of each year. The grade for Applied Music Study will be a “Pass/Fail” and will not be averaged into the student’s GPA.

This full year course is designed for students who are interested in the contemporary music scene and the music industry. Throughout the course students will explore elements of recording, digital music, songwriting, audio production, traditional rock band instruments (guitar, keyboards, drums, bass) and more. The Music Production & Performance Capstone presents the opportunity to explore an individualized project focused in the skill sets developed throughout the prior Music Production courses. The objectives of Music Theory One are designed to develop in students a thorough understanding of the rules and principles involved in using the language of music; increase their ability to analyze music orally and visually and increase their ability to read music in all clefs. In addition, students will develop skill in composing, arranging, harmonizing and improvising music and aspects of performance.

This course is designed for students who may want to enter college as music majors or minors. This course will explore the fundamentals of musical content in both music theory and ear training. Within the music theory sequence, students will learn the basic building blocks of harmony (intervals, scales, triads, chords), species counterpoint, Roman numeral analysis, figured bass, four- part writing and the rules of voice leading, large-scale structures and form, chromaticism and modulation, twentieth-century musical concepts, and symphonic repertoire. In the ear-training portion of this course, students will work towards fluency in listening, singing, and dictation and transcription techniques. This course is a concurrent college level course with credit granted by the college.
