During LAB Lit fest, Year 7 and 8 students learned about the Day of the Dead, and the traditions associated with it and the importance of symbolism in Mexican Culture.
They watched clips of the film Coco and studied the lyrics of some of the songs from the film such as ‘Recuérdame’ and ‘Un poco loco’.
They created alebrijes, which are brightly coloured Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures, also known as spirit animals. They are often a blend of two or three animals:
Through the use of film, LAB Year 9 students discovered more about the Spanish language through interactive activities, discussion and conversations about Mexican culture.
The workshop gave them the opportunity to experience the Spanish language differently and gain some cultural knowledge that was portrayed in the film.
A Message from Mrs Morales - Teacher of Spanish
Dear LAB community,
It's my pleasure to introduce myself as a new member of this lovely team. My full name is Ines Maria Morales. I was born in Córdoba, a beautiful city in the south of Spain which is nicer to visit during the spring season because it is one of the hottest cities in Spain in August. My favourite place to go is Malaga, which is just 1 hour drive away from my hometown and where I spent most of my childhood. I am the oldest daughter of Nicolas and Ines. It is very traditional for Spanish families to name the first born child after their Dad or Mum.
I was a school teacher before I moved to the UK in 2013 and since then I have been working in different schools across the Greenwich borough. I have always had a passion for teaching and I recently joined Leigh Academy Blackheath, where I am very happy to support students across all year groups in their learning of Spanish and to run two extra-curricular Spanish clubs after school. I would like to encourage your children to get involved in them if they have not already!
I am thankful to all the members of the staff and students for giving me such a warm welcome, despite the fact that I joined the trust at the end of the academic year.
Leigh Academy Blackheath is an outstanding place to work and study, so I am honoured to be part of it. I look forward to the next academic year and the opportunities it will bring for us all.
Best wishes for the summer holidays,
Mrs Morales
In this module’s Spanish lessons, Year 8 students have been on an exciting tour around Latin America. We have looked in detail at Mexico and Cuba, combining a revision of the most important transferable knowledge from this year’s curriculum (predominantly past, present and future verbs in the first person) with finding out about some of the important cultural aspects of these fascinating countries (such as Frida Kahlo, the Day of the Dead and the Cuban Revolution). The module concluded with a piece of extended writing in which students used the past tense to write a description of an imaginary trip to either Cuba or Mexico.
