The 2021/2022 Academic year has been an extremely positive and successful year for all of our Airy community. Throughout this first full academic year since the global pandemic, students and staff continue to thrive by practising resilience and demonstrating the LAB values.
It has been wonderful this module to see such a wide range of experiences though so many co-curricular activities taking place in the school and Airy students being at the forefront of these. The Art, DT and Computing exhibition, Matilda Production, LAT Sports days, STEAM Leaders, and LAB Lit Fest demonstrated that we have many extremely talented students in Airy college who continue to surprise us with their dedication and commitment. Please do see the curriculum pages for more information on these events.
Airy college attendance ends the year with a year to date attendance figure of 92%, which continues to be above national average. We are extremely proud of our students who have worked hard to ensure they are regularly attending school. Well done to 8F, Miss West tutor group who got the best overall attendance in Airy at 94.5%
Airy tutor group attendance figures:
7C = 94.5% 7F = 92.2%
8C = 92.3% 8F= 94.5%
9C = 90.4% 9F = 89.8%
10C = 88.3% 10F = 91.1%
The following students received 100% attendance this academic year :
Zachary 7F Elijah 8C Alex 8C Charlie 8C Juliana 8F
Jacob 9C Princess 9C Eria 10C
Airy college has also finished second on the whole Academy leader board for merits with an incredible 25871 merits (only 94 merits behind Fawcett who claimed the number 1 spot this year!)
Airy tutor groups have been competing to receive the most merit totals each week. Merits are given to students who are demonstrating our LAB values.
We are very pleased to announce that 7C, Mr Warren's Tutor group are our overall winners with the most amount of merits. I would also like to give a special mention to 8F, Miss West's tutor group who were always hot on the heels each week of Mr Warren and a very special mention to 9F, Mrs Hunt's tutor group who ended the year with the most improved amount of merits.
In addition to merit totals, it is important that we recognise conduct points. Conduct points are the total number of merits vs demerits.
Tutor group conduct totals:
7C = 4235 8C = 1620 9C = 777 10C = 542
7F = 1958 8F= 2346 9F = 10F = 497
A huge well done to 7C for an amazing amount of conduct points of 4235. Special mention to Elena, Kitty and Kira in 7C all received over 200 conduct points each!
Jack Petchey Awards
This module we have been pleased to take part in the Jack Petchey awards. These awards recognise the achievements of young people across London.
Members of the public – including teachers, youth workers, parents, guardians, carers, neighbours – can nominate a young person they know who is doing great things for their community.
The vast majority of our student body nominated students across the academy and Airy college. We are extremely pleased to announce that Lynnette and Amida won the Jack Petchey award.
In addition to winners that were nominated by the LAB community, we are also extremely proud of George in 7F for winning the award after being nominated by his football academy.
Winners will be awarded a special badge, certificate and a letter from Sir Jack Petchey himself, as well as the opportunity opportunity to decide how a £300 grant for their school or club.
Each module in Airy, we celebrate and recognise students in the college that have gone above and beyond each week. Students who have consistently demonstrated the LAB values of Ambition, Integrity, Resilience, Scholarship and Respect are celebrated and recognised by our college community. Each week, the tutors have been nominating a member of their tutor group and identifying the reason for their nomination. The wider Airy college team then votes for the winning student each week.
Each student has received additional LAB Ambassador merits. All students nominated receive appreciations in virtual assemblies with the reasons they have been nominated also shared.
Below is the list of students in modules 5 and 6 that have been selected for student of the fortnight:
Eren B 7C Chloe A 10F Adam B 10F
Paige L 8F Taiwo A 10C Frankie K 9F
Lynette N 9C Jessica P 10F
At the end of each module, we also have the opportunity to invite students to attend our Airy Celebration Breakfast. Students will be invited for consistently displaying the LAB values and for collecting the highest amount of merits. The event falls on the last week of the module.
As we come to the end of another academic year, we are sad to say goodbye to some members of the Airy community: Miss West, 8F tutor, Mrs Banton and Miss Jean, our Airy Student service managers. We do not have the words to thank all three for their commitment, dedication and support for our Airy students and staff. We wish them all the best for their future. You will all be missed by everyone at LAB .
On Thursday 21st July 2022 all of the Airy college community were invited to a Summer celebration garden party where we thanked Mrs Banton, Miss Jean and Mrs West for their contribution to the college . This was also a wonderful opportunity for all of the Airy community to celebrate the end of a challenging and very positive year.
The year ahead
We are fortunate to have joining our Airy pastoral team two existing members of staff to in the role of Student Service manager

“Hey everyone! I’m sure most of you are familiar with me, if not I’m Mr Murdock, I’ve been an Airy LSA at LAB for the past 6 months, when we return in September I will be an Airy SSM along with Ms Ford! I’m looking forward to my new role and working with you all! Enjoy your summer holidays!”
In addition to Mrs Ford and Mr Murdock moving to Airy we have a few new members of staff joining the team Ms Renneberg and Ms Roberts
I am a native speaker of Spanish. Originally from South America. I have experience teaching KS3, 4 and 5 in Spanish and KS3 French. Throughout my career I have a long history of working with young people in a variety of settings. I am also a qualified Social Worker with experience in advocating for young carers.
I have a real passion for my language and its complexity, as well as the culture and history of South America. Being able to share this with my learners is so rewarding as I believe that the study of foreign languages helps them to become more open-minded individuals. Through my experience of working with young people, I understand the challenges they face and use creative approaches to enable them to become competent linguists.

One of my highest achievements in sport was being offered a Full Scholarship to play Basketball at a Division 1 school in America, this was a great experience as I got the chance to study outside the UK on a full scholarship whilst playing Basketball at a high level.
With the opportunity I got from my achievement, this made me want to give and help students get the same opportunity and achieve the same at a high level.
I hold a strong passion for teaching and guiding the next generation of youth, through my experience of having exceptional educators who were influential in my development, I now seek to do the same for the current and future generations. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to beginning my teaching career at Leigh Academy.
