The following contains the major events and discoveries leading from present day in the real world up to the "Present Day" of Last Frontier. This Timeline is written from the view of Humans, and is what most students of the Human educational system would learn. Timelines from the view of the other Species will be released in the future. Additional information that is discovered in game may be added to this timeline depending on the likelihood of it becoming general knowledge.
Earth History prior to 2018 is well-recorded, and all Last Frontier characters have the potential of knowing anything you might find in a real world history book, or on reputable history sources on the Internet. Real world major corporations and their names have been excluded from this timeline for legal purposes. Alternate corporations have been created in their stead.
Names, and Terms that your character is very likely to know are in bold.
2018 - Earth as it is with existing countries and technology. Corporate and individual names changed to protect the innocent. The early 21st century is recorded, historically, as the beginning of the 2nd Space Race. Instead of governments, corporations now vie for commercially viable space travel (Space tourism, space mining, etc)
2021 - The first commercially funded manned space mission. CEO of Coring Industries along with a non-military crew of 3 visit the international space station, streamed live on social media. Success of this mission sparks newfound commercial interest and investment in stellar enterprises.
2027 - SpaceTech establishes the first viable space tourism service, catering to the ridiculously wealthy.
2029 - Skyfront Inc’s unmanned mining rover “Dig-it” lands on asteroid Ryugu, successfully mines cobalt and nickel from the Asteroid’s surface.
2030 - An undetected pocket of high pressure ammonia erupts and damages Dig-it’s communication equipment. Contact with rover is lost. “Save Dig-it” crowdfunding campaign raises 1.2 billion USD on IndieKicker. Rescue mission scheduled for 2032.
2031 - On the 10 year anniversary of Coring’s first trip to the International space station, Coring signs deal with leaders of US, China and Russia to build a launch bay for launching orbital space missions. Coring secures sole commercial rights to use the launch bay.
2034 - Skyfront’s rescue rover “Lassie” lands on Ryugu. Dig-it is repaired and continues mining operations. In that same year Skyfront is acquired by Millenium Global.
2036 - SpaceTech launches the first modules for its own Space Station/Resort.
2037 - United Nations passes the “Clean Space Act” Following several incidents of space debris landing in populated zones. NASA spearheads efforts to clear away space debris by forming the OSD (Orbital Services Department), funded through Federal taxation and voluntary contributions from other space capable nations.
2042 - Researchers at RPL (Rocket Propulsion Laboratory) build the first working prototype of a Field Pulse Emission (FPE) drive, launching a 15kg test capsule into orbit.
2048 - SpaceTech completes Olympus, it's orbital research station and resort hotel.
2049 - Millenium Global expands mining operations to 1989 ML, Nereus, and 2011 UW158. Coring Industries along with a Chinese Space Department research team launches the unmanned experimental vehicle Jianwei using the first full size FPE drive. It makes the trip to Mars and back in 48 days, 14 hours and 12 minutes.
2051 - The “Mars Marathon” begins, the race to create an FPE vehicle capable of transporting humans into space.
2054 - Despite public outcry Millenium Global establishes an ore storage and processing facility on the moon. As the only entity still using chemical rockets at the time of the FPE ban, MG opens a lucrative surface to orbit shuttle service, allowing it to fund massive expansion of its operations as the only ticket to space for several years while the other 2 Corporations (Space Tech and Coring Industries) scrambled to convert back to rockets.
2057 - Negotiations between Coring and MG for mutual use of the ISS launch bay break down. Coring is blacklisted from use of the MG shuttle service. Coring Industries is absorbed into a research division of the Chinese Space program, and through political pressure from the Chinese State department is granted shuttle access again.
2058 - The Russian and Chinese space programs merge, and incorporate a number of smaller tech companies and European Union national programs, into the Eurasian Scientific Space Alliance (ESSA), and collectively take over Main control of the ISS, renaming it to the ESSA Space Station (a colossal PR blunder as the world began referring to it as the ESS-ASS) . Special dispensation is given to NASA and other purely non-commercial scientific organizations for use of the station. ESSA enters the field of consumer electronics to fund its research and activities. MG and SpaceTech successfully negotiate shared use of the Olympus Mission Bay for launching of FPE vehicles.
2058-2066 - The Reorganization occurs. This is a great political upheaval in Europe, Asia and Africa leading to a radical change in borders and governmental entities. Where many small countries existed, now stand much larger Republics of unified nation-states. ESSA renames itself to Earth Space-Science Association, keeping its current acronym.
2063 - ESSA Researchers discover a new hypertensile material which they name ECTAF (Excited Carbon Toroidal Attenuating Fibers) capable of withstanding extreme cutting or tearing forces. They immediately begin research on developing the first space elevator using this technology.
2066 - SpaceTech patents Internal Conductive Shielding which redirects energy from FPE drives so it can be channeled around the internal chambers of space vehicles. This technology allows manned FPE vehicle missions.
2067 - Various animals are sent around the solar system in FPE vehicles, to test the effects. Conspiracy theorists claim there were over 50 missions, but SpaceTech only acknowledges 23. All of which demonstrate FPE travel with SpaceTech ICS® is 100% safe.
2073 - ESSA builds the Orbital Transmission Elevator using ECTAF technology. Transferring supplies and personnel into orbit now becomes extremely inexpensive. Despite remaining tension between ESSA and MG, ESSA permits all commercial and non-commercial uses of the Elevator, in exchange for modest research donations, of course. SpaceTech opens the “Family Wing” on Olympus, priced and designed for the Middle and Upper-Middle Class.
2074 - Construction begins on a SpaceTech Mars resort called Elysium. MG also establishes a mining colony on Mars called Mining Colony 1 (MG is not into creative names). MC1 is Millenium Global's first foray into manned space mining. All of its previous mining operations were purely automated machinery.
2078 - While all of this progress has been made in space travel, International tensions have gradually escalated over the last 30 years to the point of war. Increasing wage gaps between upper and lower class, economic instability, scarcity of natural resources, overpopulation; For every person on Earth there was a different explanation for why the war started. We do know who shot first, though. The first ICBM was launched by The Atlantic Commonwealth (a Federation of Nation-States in Western Europe and Northern and Western Africa) at the capital city of The Asiatic Republic (China, Mongolia, Russia, former USSR Nations & Japan).
2080 - Seeing the potential for the war to spread to the West, All Northern and Southern American Nations united into the American Federation of Nations.
2080-2085 - Numerous peace missions were launched by the AFN who refused to take sides in the war. Through their efforts, peace was eventually established, but not before great devastation across what was once Europe and Asia.
2087 - Despite “The Ruckus” as the spaceward population liked to call it (Referring to the war on Earth), development continued on the ESSASS, Olympia and Mars. Elysium and Mining Colony 1 were both completed this year. New telescopes placed at the edge of the Solar System, combined with advanced imaging tech began spotting other livable worlds around the Galaxy. But what was even more interesting, were a series of strange matter clusters traveling outside the edge of the galaxy. They were like no other asteroids anyone had ever seen. They contained extremely rare forms of Plutonium, Nickel, Cobalt and many others. Unfortunately, even with FPE drives it would take over 1,000 years to reach them. But that didn't stop people from dreaming. Greed finds a way.
2088 - Excelsior, an FPE driven probe launched by ESSA in 2076 reaches Alpha Centauri and begins studying it from orbit. New Quantum Entanglement Communication Protocols allow for near instantaneous transmission of data over great distances.
2093 - ESSA completes construction of two new research stations on the moons of Mars. One on Phobos and one on Deimos.
2098 - 3 new colonies, sponsored by the 3 major Commonwealths of Earth (The Atlantic Commonwealth, The Asiatic Republic, and the American Federation of Nations) are completed on Mars.
2102 - Citing “Poor Civil Management” the Mars colonies separate from their home nations and form their own central government. Earth Commonwealths attempt to stop the separation through Military force, but are prevented by mutual resistance from ESSA, SpaceTech and MG who all agreed a territorial war on Mars would be counter to their respective interests.
2102-2130 - Mars colonization continues. Earth governments refuse to advance very much in the face of a multi-planet civilization. 60% of Earth’s population and 100% of Mars’ is now employed by one of the Big 3.
2142 - A joint effort from the American Federation of Nations and the Asiatic Republic attempted an Orbital Colony floating above the corrosive atmosphere of Venus. Due to a design flaw, some say sabotage, the colony failed to maintain altitude and sank into the Venusian atmosphere killing thousands and nearly bankrupting both Governments. They were bailed out by MG owned Universal Bank, who installed Bank Personnel into key Governmental positions to ensure the stability (and repayment) by both Republics.
2150 - Colony ship launched towards Earth-like planet, Anille, discovered in the Alpha Centauri system. Expected arrival 2168.
2178 - The first Multi-Generational Colony Ship "Long Haul" is launched by ESSA towards NEP 1, expected to arrive by 2652.
2179 - Similar ships sent by MG ("Multi-Generational Ship 1" or MGS1) and SpaceTech ("Infinity").
2217 - A Non-Random Electromagnetic Signal starts popping up on listening stations all across the network of human colonized planets. Triangulation of the signal points to Poseidon II, the aquatic planet discovered in 2215. No discernible meaning can be extracted from the signal, but it certainly indicated intelligent and technologically advanced life, to be able to generate a signal of such magnitude that can travel such distances in only 2 years. Excelsior 24 launched from the nearest colonized planet to investigate.
2219 - Excelsior 24 arrives at Poseidon II, finding the planet surrounded by a fleet of “reverse Submarines”, space vehicles filled with water. No indication of these ships were present when Excelsior 23 scanned the planet previously. Excelsior 24 replayed the original signal sent by the Pisceans via old earth radio emitters, and was immediately blasted from the sky.
2220 - Unsure of the intent of these aliens, it was the collective consensus to wait, watch and prepare for war. Humanity had plenty of experience fighting wars on the ground, but this is the first time they might find themselves fighting in space.
2222-2225 - The rallying cry spread far and wide and whether by enthusiastic acceptance or stern warning, planet after planet joined the Council. The only holdout was Earth itself. The collective governments of Earth insisted that, naturally, they should be the ones to hold the reigns of human government. They would not bow down to a ragtag bunch of colonists.
2227 - The first Daedalus Battlecruiser comes off the assembly line. Built in orbit around Mars, it is a combination of the engineering expertise of MG and the cutting edge technology of ESSA. It houses an array of traditional explosive, nuclear and energy-based weaponry.
2232 - In the darkness of space, a fleet of battle cruisers awaits visual contact of an approaching signal coming from the direction of Poseidon II. The signal is in English and says only, “Please listen. We are coming.” After 3 weeks of tense anticipation, the source of the signal finally came into view. It was the Excelsior 23 probe. It appeared to have been crushed and then pulled roughly back into shape and repaired with parts from something like an ancient 20th century coal furnace. Once it was within a few thousand kilometers it stopped and emitted a sudden microwave burst. In that burst contained a translation codec for the Piscean languages into 50 of the major human languages. On the front of the half-mangled probe was attached a golden plaque. Scanners indicated it was made of gold-anodized aluminum. On the surface of the plaque was etched an image of a nude human male and female. To the left of them was a series of rays emanating from a single point. Above them was a strange symbol made of two circles with a line connecting them. Below them was a series of circles with a little squiggly line leading from the 3rd circle, under the 4th and 5th and up between the 5th and 6th circles towards the humans.
2233 - Further instructions came from the Pisceans, apparently our crude radio-emitters caused them immense pain, which is why they had to shoot down Excelsior 24. They recognized we were the big fish in this ocean and while they would not cower, they also did not wish to be eaten.
2240 - The "Big Deal" signed between leaders of ICP and the Piscean planet, structuring the future of trade and diplomatic relations between the two civilizations.
2253 - ESSA Colony Ship "Long Haul" reports unexpected failures in the habitation and food processing sections of the ship. Due to limited functionality of these facilities, the Ship's captain begins a rationing program.
2257 - Efforts by the ICP to contact and reintegrate Earth into the galactic civilization are ignored. Monitoring of Earth news frequencies demonstrate widespread poverty and civil breakdown in the American, European and Asiatic continents.
2275 - A major repair effort is completed on the "Long Haul" bringing life support facilities 100% back online.
2279 - Major thrust failure on the ESSA Colony Ship "Long Haul". Expected arrival on NEP 1 is now calculated at 10,000 years. Ship captain begins search for closer inhabitable planets.
2283 - The first Pisceans are admitted as citizens of the ICP. Piscean leaders are unexpectedly supportive of their citizens moving off planet.
2295 - Formerly an entirely unregulated process, ICP now passes a policy allowing it to veto the names of new colonies. Named the "McPlanetFace Bill" after a new colony registered the name "Planet McPlanetFace". Planet McPlanetFace remains in existence to this day, it's name staunchly defended by it's citizens who use it as a protest in favor of the rights of Colony planets.
2312 - Communications suddenly go silent with the colony ship Long Haul. While the phenomenon was not understood at the time, we now know that their ship passed through a cloud of unstable quantum particles that disrupted the quantum entanglement device they were using to communicate with ESSA. With the speed of the colony ship and its distance from home galaxy, traditional radio communication was impractical.
2324 - Leaders from 15 of the major colony planets speak before the ICP to protest ever-increasing taxation of the colony planets. Negotiations break down mid the summit, and the colony leaders go home empty handed.
2329 - The first Piscean mayor is elected of an ICP planet.
2335 - Reports of a major resurgence on Earth. While the population is only at 65% of what it was before the embargo, quality of life appears to be on the rise. Still no responses to outside communication.
2342 - A tabloid article, "10 Reasons Core Citizens Are Better Than You" goes viral and sparks new strife between the Core Planets and the outer colonies, by highlighting the disparities in quality of life.
2354 - Piscean corporations attain approval from the ICP to begin advertising directly to humans for the first time, bypassing the import companies owned by SpaceTech.
2368 - Aqi'p'guar the 2nd, high leader of Poseidon II requests financial assistance from the ICP claiming major bankruptcies in many of it's homeworld industries.
2401 - Poseidon II joins the ICP as an official planet and grants commercial and research space to ESSA, MG and SpaceTech.
2431 - Scientist Johan Pedrofki postulates the possibility of a Staged Teleportation augmentation that could 10x the speed of existing FPE drives. The principle operates based on what he claims to be the "Universal Location Array" which is a theory that every point in the universe has its own quantum signature. By augmenting the transmission points on a standard FPE drive, he states that you can trigger staged sequential teleportations by altering quantum location signature of the transmission points. This technology does not permit full teleportation, but through simulated teleportation of key anchor points of the FPE drive you can "trick" the rest of the ship into moving with these anchor points, causing it to move through space faster than the speed of light, with no inertial consequences. He is promptly ridiculed by the general scientific community as a crack pot.
2465 - The first Piscean is voted into the Supreme Council of the ICP.
2592 - SpaceTech colony ship "Infinity" lands on NEP 1 and establishes the first colony. Colonists rapidly succumb to the toxic environment of the planet and the colony dies out.
2594 - MG colony ship "MGS1" lands on NEP 1 and learning from the SpaceTech disaster, the crew remains in the ship, establishing a colony within.
2664 - Strife built up rapidly between Humans and the Highborne, as Humans rejected their efforts to convince the rest of the universe to submit to their same genetic selection programs. Pisceans found the principles quite intriguing and many did convert to the Highborne's philosophy. Many others were heavily invested in the Human economy, and so stayed loyal.
2672 - With their advanced weapons and teleportation technology, the Highborne had the clear advantage, despite lower numbers. An attack from the Highborne could never be anticipated, and never detected until it was too late. While the Muk'taa hammered at the flanks, the Highborne and Augmented struck key infrastructure, completely disabling the ICPs ability to organize and fight back.
2680 - Nearly defeated, the Highborne retreated to their stronghold on planet Alexandria, and attempted to surrender. The eager Muk'taa, despite ICP pleas, ignored the surrender and commandeered a teleportation portal, forcing the Highborne manning it to operate it, and followed them through. Planet Alexandria was destroyed by them, along with the High Scholars (Leaders of the Highborne) who knew how teleportation and much of the Highborne's advanced technology worked.
2682 - Johan Pedrofki proven correct by scientists of the Age of Rediscovery. Staged Teleportation FPE drives work and were the primary drives used in Highborne technology.
2710 - Limited teleportation is developed with the help of the remaining Highborne who were now integrating into human society. As the Highborne's old teleportation portals broke down, they were gradually replaced with the cobbled together versions the ICP had re-developed. They were great for transporting raw material, but were problematic when transporting living matter. Living things tended to undergo genetic warping resulting in the rapid growth of cancerous lesions and death. The greatest technology to come out of this age was the Recombinator, which permitted rapid singular construction of complex items, making the assembly line almost obsolete.
2711 - Teleportation research stations on Phobos and Deimos go silent. Rumors abound of a portal to hell, demons walking the surface of the moons and a gallant soldier fighting them all off to save humanity. Purely folk-tale nonsense of course.
2724 - A great plague sweeps through Earth, decimating almost 80% of its population.
2737 - Using Staged Teleportation FPE (ST FPE) drives, new colony ships are launched towards NEP 1 and other NEPs.
2739 - The Humanity First Movement Video goes viral, revealing the existence of Hybrids to the Galaxy.
2740 - Hybrids begin to integrate themselves into society, hiding their animal traits to get by. An extensive propaganda campaign is launched to warn people of the supposed dangers of these mutated animals.
2760 - ST FPE drives achieve widespread use across the galaxy, reducing transport times between planets to a fraction of the previous time. Estimated time to NEP planets is still around 50 years, though.
2787 - The first ST FPE colony ship arrives on NEP 1 and sets up a teleporter array. The first shield generator is field tested at this colony.
2800 - Being the closest to the frontier, the Muk'Taa Protectorate claimed ownership over several Near Edge Planets and demanded colonizing and mining rights over them. The petition was refused leading to the Frontier War that lasted from 2800 to 2803, and ended with a peace agreement allocating 1 of the planets to the Muk'Taa protectorate. The War declaration from the Muk'Taa arrived on Mars accompanied by a gift of 2 battle cruisers and 30 tons of raw platinum ore. In 2805, the planet was purchased from the Muk'Taa by Millenium Global at an undisclosed price.
