Organize your emails with filters

This page is targeted at

  • Those who are using Webmail and wish to filter your emails.

What filtering emails means and how you can use it

  • KUMail (Gmail) lets you divide your emails into categories, making it easier to sort and manage your inbox. Learn more on Gmail Help.

  • KUMail (Gmail) uses labels to organize your emails. You can add multiple labels to one message. Learn more on Gmail Help.

  • Though some email clients (e.g., Thunderbird) have a similar function, we recommend that you filter your messages in Gmail, not in your client software, to avoid unexpected bugs.

  • Filters can also be used to prevent non-spam emails from being marked as spam.

Create a filter in KUMail (Gmail)

1. On the top right, click Settings (gear icon) > See all settings.

2. Open the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.

3. Click Create a new filter.

4. Enter your search criteria and click Create filter.

If you don't know how to search your emails, learn more on search criteria here.

5. Check Apply the label, choose the label you want to apply to the message, and then click Create filter.

If you don’t have a label you want to apply to the message, create one before you create a filter.

Tips:

  • In KUMail (Gmail), Inbox is also treated as a label. If you want to delete your emails after they are given a certain label, check Skip the Inbox (Archive it) as well.

  • To prevent a filtered message from being marked as spam, choose Never send it to Spam.

6. The new filter is successfully added to your settings.

Hint: When you have multiple filters, KUMail (Gmail) applies them to your incoming emails from top to bottom.

Now you've set up filters, your inbox will be organized and clean. Go back to Home and go on to the next step.
