Switch between your KU account and individual Google account

There are several types of Google accounts that have completely separate services. You can create an individual Google account for yourself (***@gmail.com) and we offer you an organizational G Suite account as a campus account (***@kyoto-u.ac.jp).

Many of you already have an individual account, and some may also have a second organizational account created by your faculty, department or another institution. Here we'll introduce three ways to make switching between those accounts easier and more manageable:

  • A. Use Google's account chooser

  • B. Use different browsers for different accounts

  • C. Use different Chrome profiles for different accounts

A. Use Google's account chooser

When you'd like to switch to another account on the same browser, access Google's account chooser (Bookmark https://accounts.google.com/AccountChooser if you use this a lot).

If you are not logged in, you'll be prompted to sign in. At the top right, click Sign in.

Choose the account you want to use.

If you don't see the account you want to switch to, click Use another account and follow the instructions to sign in.

The icon at the top right indicates which account you are currently using.

Hint: If you sign in with multiple accounts, the first one you sign with on your browser is chosen by default.

By clicking on your icon, you can switch between your accounts, sign in with a new account, or sign out.

If you don't see an account you're looking for, click Add account and sign in.

If you have trouble with accounts, go to https://myaccount. google.com/ and make sure that you are logged in with the appropriate account.

While you can sign in to multiple accounts, if it causes you trouble knowing which one you are using, we recommend that you log out of all your accounts and only sign in to the account you want to use at the moment.

If you're not redirected to the logout window for some reason, go to https://accounts.google.com/Logout (bookmark this URL if you use this a lot, too) to force logout and start from scratch.

B. Use different browsers for different accounts

Distinguishing the browser depending on which account you'll use is another way to manage multiple Google accounts. For example, you can use Firefox to sign in with your personal account and Chrome to sign in with your campus account. Of course, you can also use other browsers like Edge or Safari.

Though you must get used to the different UI that each browser offers, you won't need to switch accounts as long as you choose the right browser for the account you wish to use.

C. Use different Chrome profiles for different accounts

If you are a Chrome user, you can set up multiple profiles for different accounts, which enables you to manage your Google accounts within Chrome.

See here or search chrome profiles to learn how to create and use Chrome profiles.
