Set up basic configuration for sending/receiving emails

  • Those who are using Webmail (meaning email on your browser)

  • Those who will start using Webmail

There are four steps for setting up your KUMail as Webmail:

Step 1. Set up Desktop notification, Maximum page size, Conversation view, and Signature.

Step 2. Enter your name as a sender.

Step 3. Enable Plain text mode.

Step 4. Learn how to read messages marked as spam.

If you wish to send emails from another sender address (other than ***@kyoto-u.ac.jp), follow instructions described here.

If you like to see the list of threads on one hand and messages on the other as in many kinds of email software, enable Preview pane.

Step 1. Set up Desktop notification, Maximum page size, Conversation view, and Signature.

1. On the top right, click Settings (gear icon) > See all settings.

2. If you want to get notifications when there are new incoming emails, check New mail notifications on in the Desktop notification section.

If you don't need notifications, choose Mail notifications off.

3. In the Maximum page size section, choose how many conversations (threads) you want to see per page.

4. In the Conversation View section, choose whether you want emails of the same topic to be grouped together.

If you want to see each messages individually in Inbox, check Conversation view off.

5. In the Signature section, you can create your signature added at the end of every message you compose.

① Click Create new.

② Name a new signature and click Create.

③ Enter your signature in the textbox.

If you have multiple sender names and want to set up a signature for each, change the sender name and carry out the steps above.

6. At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.

Skip 2. Enter your name as a sender.

By default, your sender name on KUMail is set according to the data retrieved from all-campus LDAP server.

If you want to change it, follow the steps below.

1. On the top right, click Settings (gear icon) > See all settings.

2. Move to the Accounts tab.

3. Next to Send mail as, click edit info.

4. The name displayed next to Name is your sender name.

If you want to change it, check the radio button next to the textbox and enter your preferred name.

This setting is valid only for the Gmail application.

5. Click Save Changes.

Skip 3. Enable Plain text mode.

Sending mail has HTML style with initial setting in new KUMail(Gmail). Please follow the steps to change it to text style.

1. On the top left, click Compose.

2. At the bottom right of the New Message screen, click More options (︙).

3. Click and check Plain text mode.

4. Click on the upper right of the New Message screen.

Next time you compose a message, Plain text mode is enabled by default.

Step 4. Learn how to read messages marked as spam.

KUMail (Gmail) automatically identifies spam and other suspicious emails.

Google controls the anti-spam rules for Gmail. Make sure to check your Spam label regularly so you don't miss messages that are mistakenly marked as spam.
