My recording shares a story I told to my middle-school sketching class. I tried to communicate the idea of talent vs. skill using personal and real-world examples. I also had them do a sketch of the same object on the first day, and the last day of class. We compared the first day vs. last day drawings so they could see how their skills progressed.
My project shows a Level 2: Insight mastery of the B3 NSQ standard. Vocaroo was just one of many new tools I was introduced to during this program. I was able to create a basic recording using this tool; tools and technology are usually easy for me to pick up. But effective storytelling is definitely a skill I need to work on.
Audio recording is a more interactive communication method for online learning. It promotes learner engagement by bringing humanity into the lesson. I think using audio, or video, can have more impact for the student, as opposed to reading the same material. My recording supports learner engagement by sharing real-life situations and examples for students to reflect on. Hopefully they can relate and apply what they've heard to their own experience.
Being able to share a compelling, clear story was a challenge. I understand the usefulness of using personal stories to connect with students. But I'm still learning how to communicate with students effectively. So, while I see the benefit of a more natural, imperfect approach, I just don’t think well on the fly and it made for a poor recording, in my opinion.
