It's been another wonderful week in Year 2. This is what we've been up to
This week in Year 2, we have been busy recapping our Year 1 learning about questions, what a question is, the question words we know, and remembering to use a question mark at the end of a question. Linking to our History learning, we have been thinking carefully about the questions we could ask Samuel Pepys. We’ve continued to find out lots about who he was and why people remember him today.
In Drama, we took part in some exciting hot-seating, where we asked and answered questions as if we were Samuel Pepys himself. It's been a fun way to bring our history topic to life! Maybe your child would like to re-enact this with you at home. You could ask them some questions too!
After launching our Write Strong handwriting program last week and exploring positions and the Enchanted Tree, the children have now started learning the letters from the Flame Flicker Family. The letters in this family are 'l, i, t, u'. You can help at home by asking your child to show you how they form these letters in the air. They might even like to have a go at writing them too!
Here’s how we describe each movement:
l – down, bump, flick
i – down, bump, flick, then put a dot on top
t – down, bump, flick, then add a line across
u – down, push (along the ground), up, down, bump, flick
Encouraging your child to say the movements aloud as they write can really help build confidence and consistency.
This week has also been Space Week, and Year 2 have been learning all about what it’s like to be an astronaut! The children have been finding out about the planets in our solar system. Can your child remember how many there are, or any of their names? Which ones are closest to the Sun?
Throughout the week, the children have had the opportunity to get creative by designing and making telescopes, sending a postcard from space, and using oil pastels to create their very own colourful solar system artwork. We definitely have some future astronauts in Year 2!
A huge thank you to everyone for supporting World Mental Health Day today by sending your child in wearing something yellow. It’s so important to promote understanding of mental health and wellbeing, and we’ve linked this to our ‘My Happy Mind’ learning in school. We have selected our new Safeguarding Ambassadors and Happiness Heroes! Well done to all of the children who were selected. We’re so proud of you! We’re looking forward to seeing you begin your new roles and take on these important responsibilities.
Have a wonderful weekend with your families. We look forward to seeing you all on Monday :)
