Dear Year 2 Families,
As we finish another exciting week at King's Academy Northern Parade, Year 2 have impressed us with their fantastic attitude to learning and their ability to think creatively. They've brought imagination, curiosity and positivity to everything they've done!
This week in English, we have continued exploring Beegu and thinking carefully about how we can help her return home. The children have planned a Lost poster and will be writing a character description to share key information about Beegu. Our learning continues to focus on grammar and sentence structure, alongside regular practise of handwriting and dictated sentences to support writing fluency and accuracy.
In shared reading this week, the children have been showing off their fantastic comprehension skills through our focus text, Beegu. They used their inference and listening skills to take part in immersive discussions about the story, including exploring character feelings. The children identified and discussed why Beegu experienced different emotions at different points in the book. They also carried out a role play to demonstrate their understanding of the sequence of events, and made thoughtful predictions about where Beegu might be from, how she ended up on planet Earth, and where her journey may take her next.
In Maths this week, the children have continued to develop their addition and subtraction skills using two 2-digit numbers to 100. They have used resources and pictorial methods to partition numbers into tens and ones, and have practised bridging across tens to support them when crossing through the next ten.
In Science, we have continued learning about animal habitats and adaptations by exploring the Arctic. The children discussed how animals survive in such extreme conditions, including how they keep warm and find food. They then selected an Arctic animal to draw and wrote an in-depth fun fact, demonstrating excellent research and enthusiasm. This half term, we are building a deep understanding of the adaptations animals need to live in four different habitats around the world.
In RE this week, the children have been learning about Christianity and how Jesus showed love to his followers through stories such as Zacchaeus, the healing of a blind man, and the story of Jairus. The children demonstrated their understanding through a role play, showing the message of love and kindness in action.
In Art this week, the children began Lesson 1 of our unit with the learning intention: “To investigate maps as a stimulus for drawing.” They created their own journey maps from home to school on A3 paper and used a range of different media such as crayons, pastels and pencils to add bright and detailed features to their work. The children also explored the work of artist Susan Stockwell, using her map of North America made from electronic components, and her dress made from maps, as inspiration. They will continue this learning journey by developing their 2D maps into 3D artwork using a range of resources.
In History this week, the children have been exploring toys from different generations, including those from their grandparents’ generation, their parents’ generation and their own. The children loved learning about how toys and games have changed over time and had the opportunity to play with and experience generational toys and games. They also discussed the similarities and differences between the toys from each generation and considered the materials the toys and games were made from.
How you can help at home?
Just 10 minutes of reading every day makes a huge difference! It helps children improve their fluency, build their vocabulary and reading stamina, and develop a love of reading for pleasure.
We also encourage children to use Oxford Reading Buddy for additional reading practice, and Numbots to strengthen quick recall in maths. These small, regular steps really support progress in class.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend! We look forward to seeing you again on Monday for another week of learning.
