This week in Year 1...
March 2026
Dear Year 1 Families,
Welcome back to the second part of the Spring term. We are hoping to see some sunshine and a lot less rain over the coming weeks!
This week our school value has been safety, and the children have demonstrated this brilliantly in the classroom, on the playground, and in the dinner hall. It has been wonderful to see them looking out for one another and showing care for others’ safety.
In English, we launched our learning about Chinese New Year. The children listened to the story of The Great Race and discussed which animal they are in the zodiac. Children born in 2019 are in the Year of the Pig, and those born in 2020 are in the Year of the Rat. The children have been very excited to learn what this means and the characteristics linked to their animals. They have created lanterns and dragons and produced some fantastic writing using their phonics knowledge and spelling strategies.
In Maths, the children have been learning about addition to 10 and exploring fact families. They have been forming number sentences in four different ways, demonstrating commutativity and a strong understanding of number. For example, if we know that 4 + 6 = 10, then we also know that 6 + 4 = 10, and that 10 is made from both 4 and 6.
In Science, the children explored floating and sinking. They thoroughly enjoyed the water play and made predictions about which objects would float and which would sink.
In Art, we have begun a new unit on paper play, inspired by the sculpture ‘Other’ by Samantha Stephenson.
We have had a very positive start to the new term and are excited for the learning journeys ahead this half term.
Kind regards,
The Year 1 Team
