As we head towards the end of term, we want to acknowledge the hard work that families, staff, and children are putting in during what is always a busy and challenging time of year. We know that circumstances can be difficult for families, and we truly appreciate the ongoing effort to keep attendance as strong as possible. Attendance data helps us understand who is missing school, but it is the relationships we build that help us understand why—and how we can work together to improve things.
A child’s sense of belonging is key to good attendance. After the festive break, even confident children can find the return a little wobbly. We want to ensure that every child feels noticed and valued when they come back to school.
Here are some of the approaches we are focusing on:
Every child is greeted warmly on arrival.
Absences are noticed, and children are welcomed back with a smile and reassurance.
Messaging about attendance will be shared before and after the break to reinforce routines gently and positively.
Spring Term provides a natural ‘reset’, so we will be emphasising fresh starts and new habits.
Simple incentives will be introduced to help re-energise children’s motivation to attend daily.
Small acts of belonging can make a big difference for our pupils.
With winter illnesses circulating, it’s important that families feel confident in knowing when children should be in school and when they should stay home. Here are the most helpful, clear resources available:
NHS Guidance: “Is my child too ill for school?” – gives straightforward advice for parents.
Government guidance on preventing and controlling infections, including ventilation, hygiene, and vaccinations.
A–Z of Infectious Diseases – outlines what to do for specific illnesses.
Education Hub Blog: Reducing the spread of illness in schools this winter.
We will continue to signpost these resources to families to support good decision-making and minimise unnecessary absences.
To help children start the new term positively, we will be launching a January Attendance Drive focused on building good routines and celebrating consistent effort.
This whole-school initiative will include:
Weekly recognition for improved attendance
Class-based incentives
Celebrations for children who show persistence and effort
Positive messaging in assemblies and newsletters
Our aim is to support children to rebuild habits after the break and to help families feel supported, not pressured.
Always,
The Attendance Team🌻

Attendance Shout Out!
We’re so proud of our children and families who are working hard to get into school every day. Each morning your child walks through the door, they’re opening up a world of new learning, friendships, and fun experiences.
Did you know? Even just one day in school can spark a new idea, a new skill, or a new memory with friends. Every day really does make a difference, and we love seeing those smiling faces come through the gates!
A huge thank you to all our families who are helping children get in on time and ready to learn. It’s not always easy (we know mornings can be a juggle!), but the effort is worth it.
This month, we’ll be celebrating great attendance with class shout-outs and special rewards so keep an eye out to see who will be recognised!
Let’s keep going together – one day at a time, one smile at a time. We can’t wait to see everyone back in school next week!
