Where I am From...

I am from a small town with a population of 549

Where there are no stop lights

And you always wave to those driving by.

From the tan house with the red roof

in the middle of 15 acres

And a two-mile drive on a dirt road.

I’m from the bird’s caw being my alarm

Where you can listen to the owls calling for each other at night

And the rain on the tin roof putting me to sleep.

From the mud and dust from the dirt road covering the cars

And the ability to hear who is coming to your house from miles away

Where no one but your family comes to bother you.

I am from the unpredictable sunny showers,

The extremely vibrant fall foliage and feet and feet of snow,

Where winter lasts for six cold months.

From my stepmom’s Italian cooking,

When after school the house always smells like Thanksgiving Day,

Making your mouth water every time you walk through the front door.

I’m from a family of many generations

Where all that matters is hard work

And the love for others.
