About the Genre

George Ella Lyon ((born April 25, 1949) is an American writer and teacher from Kentucky who created the popular style of poetry, Where I’m From, in 1993. By capturing the essence of where students are from (or not from), the finished poems become in-depth studies of the people, places and things that make them uniquely who they are.

This type of poetry is especially well-suited to the diverse but intimate community that is KMS. From various parts of the country and globe, our students come together each year to form a new family and “home” with us in Killington, Vermont.

I hope you enjoy the poems that the 2020 seniors composed to describe who they are through the lenses of memory, time and place.

Thanks for reading (and listening)!
