Self-reflection is a foundational element of the Kearsarge Regional School District’s Portrait of an Educator (POE) Professional Growth Model. It serves as the first step in each educator’s annual professional learning cycle and is intentionally embedded to promote continuous growth, professional agency, and alignment with district expectations.
Purpose of Self-Reflection:
Self-reflection allows educators to:
Critically evaluate their own proficiency in relation to the three district-defined competencies:
Assess their performance against clearly articulated learning targets that define effective, research-based practice.
Identify strengths and areas for growth using a growth-oriented proficiency scale, ranging from "Not Demonstrating" to "Innovative/Leading."
Set meaningful, individualized goals through the development of a SMART goal and Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP).
Why It Matters:
Self-reflection cultivates a growth mindset and reinforces professional responsibility by placing educators at the center of their own development. It fosters:
Deeper engagement with instructional practice
Alignment between personal insight and administrative feedback
Increased voice and choice, enabling educators to shape their own learning path while meeting district standards
Transparency and trust in the supervision and evaluation process
By encouraging educators to reflect honestly and constructively on their practice, the POE model promotes a culture of continuous improvement that ultimately benefits student learning and organizational effectiveness.
