Hi my name's Allie Levy and i'm a sophomore at Pomona. I'm a staff writer and i'm excited for journalism to learn how to become a better writer and learn more about the people around the school!
My family has been my main supporter my entire life. We make an effort to see each other many times a year and not only are we connected by blood but we get along like friends. Staying connected so well our entire lives has created a support system I know I can always rely on.
I've been running for 5 years now and it's really given me something to work for and strive to become best I can at. I believe it has also helped me focus on school and become overall more well rounded.
Reading has always been an escape for me. Over the years, I have collected and read hundreds of books. Books allow you to create thousands of lives within your head. I will always love reading and hope to continue.
Usually you would think that fall sports would actually stay within fall, but no, for us practice goes into winter and can even be considered year long! As a cross country, the official season starts at the beginning of the school year in August but most of the athletes take part in summer running that starts almost immediately after track season ends.
Then with hard training for three months, most varsity runners start training for the Nike race that happens at the end of November which means an extra month of training.
And finally after 6 months of summer running and the regular fall season, pre-training for track and field starts right after thanksgiving break and goes until March when the actual season starts and ends mid-June.
Then guess what! We start summer running right after the season ends. What may seem like just a fall and spring sport actually continues all year every year. We are burning our candles at both ends for four years straight and its down right exhausting.
For me, my life revolves around sports. After school every day, six days a week, yearlong. So when something so small and so simple ruins the rest of your season, you just don't know what to do.
For me, I originally sprained my ankle around late September when it rolled on a dirt patch of trail during a meet withing the first half mile. Foolishly, I decided to keep running. It seemed like nothing, something I could get over with a weekend of rest and ice. But at the Crestted Butte meet the next weekend it hurt the entire time and I knew something was wrong. Yet I kept running every day a practice. There's this pressure to not let your teammates and your coach down.
Every week when we discussed the rankings for the next meet, my coach would say, "With Allie, our ranking is ..., but with her, our ranking is...," Hearing this every week was stressful knowing that our rank dropped without me. I kept running week after week, ignoring the pain, until finally at regionals, my ankle gave out once again.
It wasn't so much the physical pain that hurt the most, but knowing that I let people down. But I tried to stay positive! We have a race in Arizona mid November where I could redeem myself, right? Nope. As of earlier this week, doctor says no running for weeks until physical therapy, then finally back to practice. Meaning no Arizona, which breaks my heart even more.
Facing College
As a sophomore in high school, college seems like such a far off thought but in reality it's just about a year and a half away. Something so big looming so close is downright terrifying. I've watched both of my older sisters stress about ACTs and SATs and college tours so the thought of doing it myself causes my stomach to drop.
We're told throughout our lives that we have to know what we want to do for the rest of our lives by the time we get to college but in reality, I have no clue what I want to do. I know my dream is the be an author but that seems unrealistic as it stands now, so more realistically, something in literature.
But that's such a broad spectrum. How am I supposed to whittle down what I want to major in? I hope within the next two years of high school I can determine what my passion is so I can really focus on it during college!
The Reality of Breaks
Often times, school breaks can be fun, relaxing and just all around a much needed absence from the everyday life of school. But what kids often forget about is how different life is when your constantly surrounded by your family. We spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 9 months a year for 13 years at school. That's a long time to spend forming relationships with your friends and teachers so it's kind of a shock to spend so much time with your family.
That's a long time to spend forming relationships with your friends and teachers so it's kind of a shock to spend so much time with your family. Don't get me wrong, I love my parents and sisters, but wow when everybody is together its so stressful. My oldest sister comes home from college but has a million different allergies so there's constantly sneezing and the dogs are barking and people are yelling and things are breaking. There's not one moment of peace and quiet.
There's not one moment of peace and quiet. Break is defined as a time for students to relaxing and start over but a lot of kids actually find emotional oasis at school around people they're comfortable with.
Barbara had been talking about newspaper in a day for months now. All of us had been pretty excited about the opportunity to spend the day working on the newspaper (and getting out of classes). They day started off splendid with pancakes and coffee.
Over the course of the day we were able to have fun as well as get an immense amount of work done (no thanks to adobe.) I did succeed at losing my pictures and then magically finding them once I already submitted my story. Not frustrating at all! I didn't know what to expect from the video interview but Mr. Kemper was super nice even though I'm absolutely terrified of him.
Best part of the day was definitely pizza. We had been working all morning and honestly got an immense amount of work done. So pizza was a nice break from the constant typing. After lunch, there was one final push to get all the articles and blogs and videos finished and put in the google drive!
