Leonardo Quintero

I was born and raised in the Pilsen neighborhood and continue to live here with my family. I love my community, despite having once been part of the violence as a teen. As a young person I lost several friends to community violence, going into my adulthood I started to lose youth program participants at an alarming rate. These experiences have challenged me to dedicate my career over the last 14 years to working with youth from across the city as a Substance Abuse Counselor, Street Outreach Counselor, Juvenile Court Advocate, and a City Programs Coordinator for a national nonprofit, among other roles.

Over the years, I have helped build several anti-violence programs such as the Peace In Pilsen initiative, which offers free family activities and safe spaces for young people while building community and teaching restorative practices. I have been part of several Restorative Justice groups and believe that I have the knowledge and experience to bring a new perspective to what policing and public safety can look like in Chicago.

My knowledge of curriculum building, and program facilitation will be fundamental to effectively develop plans for making changes within the police district, esp. implementing programs such as community courts and "second chance" workforce programs. My skills will be vital in critically evaluating the effectiveness of current policies and procedures. I believe that by organizing our communities to demand more transparency we can hold public servants accountable. Together we can create a safer Chicago.
