The educational philosophy of Aitkin High School provides the foundation for the program, the organization structure, and the existence of all extracurricular activities for students. The athletic/activity department offers a variety of activities that may help students realize their maximum potential for physical, social, and emotional growth. It is the goal of this department to promote success and growth while always respecting others. As a school we believe:
Athletic/activity competition should be an integral part of the total school program and serve as a reflection of the needs of the students and the school community.
Participants can be taught to win graciously and accept defeat in the same fashion
Participants find purpose in their school work and carry that purpose forward in their lives as a result of a sound athletic and activity program in the schools.
A sound athletic/activity department based on a sound philosophy can improve school and community morale and become a positive outlet for energy and enthusiasm.
The welfare of the individual is always the primary concern. The competition exists for the students. The student does not exist for the game.
The community should realize that control of, and responsibility for high school athletics rests entirely with the administration of the Aitkin Public School District.
Our Goal - Students will become more effective citizens and learn valuable lessons from their experience.
1) To work with others - Students will develop self-discipline, respect for authority, and the spirit of hard work and sacrifice. The team and its objectives must be placed higher than personal desires.
2) To be successful - We do not always win, but we succeed when we continually strive to do so. Learning to accept defeat only by striving to win with earnest dedication. Develop a desire to excel.
3) To develop sportsmanship - To accept any defeat like a true athlete knowing you have done your best. To build desirable social traits including emotional control, honesty, cooperation, and dependability.
4) To Improve - Continual improvement is an essential component of good citizenship. Learning to establish goals and continuously try to achieve those goals. Try to improve the skills and knowledge required and those personal traits that enhance the success of a team.
5) To enjoy athletics/activities - It is necessary for students to enjoy participation to acknowledge all of the personal rewards to be derived from athletics/activities and to give sufficiently of themselves in order to persevere and improve the program.
6) To develop desirable personal health habits - To be an active, contributing citizen, it is crucial to obtain a high degree of physical fitness through exercise and good health habits and to develop good characteristics of citizenship to community and nation .
