Vacation packages proposed by large travel agents and tour operators usually include flights, accommodation, and rent-a-car or bus tour services. Meanwhile, many micro and small tourism operators offering sustainable tourism experiences only explore B2C channels. This B2B marketplace will promote the approach between the large operators and the sustainable SMEs to build innovative packages where the former incorporate sustainable experiences offered by the latter. This platform will therefore increase competitiveness and provide access to new business opportunities and new markets, especially for micro and small tourism operators offering sustainable tourism experiences, by taking advantage of opportunities provided by digital markets.
SUSTENTURIS is a business-to-business (B2B) marketplace where Sustainable Tourism Experiences, Products, and Projects (so-called STEPs), typically originating from local SMEs, validated from the point of view of social, environmental, and destination sustainability, are advertised to promote their integration into broader offers resulting from cooperation between the various actors in the tourism industry, including global tourism operators and agents with an impact on international markets.
Who can join?
All entities, public and private, that are duly licensed and that carry out their activity related to the identified typologies (tourist entertainment activities, accommodation, restaurants, sales spaces, agri-food products, non-food artisanal products, intangible identity products, research and dissemination projects) that are sustainable from an environmental, social and destination point of view, complying with the established membership conditions/requirements (including assessment according to the RESETTING Sustainability Index).
Membership is completely free of charge for EU organizations that join until the end of the RESETTING project (mid-2024).
How does it work (for sellers and buyers)?
Sellers
They register on the platform and upload info on the product, service, or project that they intend to sell to big tour operators.
The product, service, or project is evaluated using the RESETTING Sustainability Index by GEOTA
If it is considered sustainable, it will be published on the platform. Otherwise, they can improve their offer based on the feedback received from the sustainability assessment and re-apply.
Buyers
They identify products, services, or projects on the platform that they consider suitable to form part of their tourism offer and get in touch with their promoters
Develop experiences, tourist packages, or other types of composite tourist products that integrate at least one product, service, or project available on the B2B platform
What are the main benefits?
Sellers: Overcoming the difficulty for local tourism products and services to reach consumers and markets, not only due to the lack of visibility, but also due to the inability to accredit sustainability.
Buyers: Find suppliers of sustainable products and services in order to design sustainable composite tourism products (for example experiences and tourist packages).
Both (sellers and buyers): Achieve sustainability accreditation based on sustainability indicators calculated with a life cycle approach, in a transparent and traceable way, not just a label, but also a management, education and marketing; and actively promoting partnerships between participants on the platform, to build a more sustainable tourism offer.
STEPS Selection, Assessment and Promotion
GEOTA is working with Iscte to fulfill the following two objectives:
select STEPs to populate the B2B Marketplace and assess them to assign their RESETTING Sustainability Index;
promote the incorporation of STEPs into tour packages offered by global tour operators and travel agencies in the European space.
GEOTA is an Environmental Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), whose mission is to promote sustainable development and conservation of natural and cultural heritage, through empowering citizens to become active agents of education, intervention, and environmental defense. GEOTA has been developing work in the area of sustainable tourism for several decades. Its independence and experience of working with partnerships grant GEOTA a strong ability to intervene in this field.
