New EEE interns are hired by The International School of Brussels under a Belgian employment contract for 11 months.
For non-EEE citizens, interns are hired under a maximum of 2 Belgian employment contracts for a duration of 6 months each (imposed by law). The second contract cannot be renewed due to work permit constraints. Employment is also subject to securing a single work permit from the Belgian authorities, which requires that you have already obtained your diploma (Bachelor level minimum).
The International School of Brussels is an equal opportunities employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, religion or marital status.
ISB has established a rigorous vetting process and code of conduct for all employees with regard to child protection.
Interns will be expected to arrive early August 2025 for a smooth installation in Belgium.
Salaries are paid monthly (maximum 11 times) at the end of the month that has been performed, after deductions for social security charges and income tax made in accordance with Belgian law. Employment contracts specify a gross monthly salary in accordance with law and not an annual salary, as in some countries.
The International School of Brussels depends from the Joint Committee 337 (Commission Paritaire) and follows its rules regarding the salary indexations (cost of living index). Interns' salaries will therefore be regularly indexed in accordance with CP 337 (indexations regulations do not depend from ISB and can be modified by Belgian authorities at any time).
Belgian income tax is withheld at source every month. As only part of the tax year (= calendar year in Belgium) is worked for both the August-December period and January-June period, almost all the tax paid can be claimed back from the Belgian tax authorities at the end of the internship. ISB assists the interns with this process. Actual reimbursement can expected during the period 11/2024 to 06/2025.
For interns hired outside Belgium, the school will arrange a round trip ticket at the current (i.e. time of move to Belgium) APEX or least expensive tourist airfare rate.
Interns are allowed to bring 2 pieces of luggage. ISB will reimburse the overweight upon receipts. Transportation from the airport to accommodation is reimbursed by the school.
Although the school year starts in the 4th week of August, an induction program is organized starting during the 2nd week of August. This program is mandatory.
If you need accommodation in Belgium during your internship, ISB can assist you in this respect. Interns will have the obligation to register in the Official Population Register (Townhall) at the apartment's address. They will be assisted by our relocation agency (RKS).
The school currently rents fully furnished apartments that are placed at the disposal of the interns against a small contribution for the rent and charges (to cover utilities such as electricity, heating, water, insurances, …).
The contribution is 450€ per month. The accommodation is a 2-bedroom flat shared by 2 interns and is accessible by public transportation from the school. It includes a broadband internet connection (a benefit in kind on 5€ will be deducted for the private use of internet). Pictures of the apartments can be found here.
A good conduct agreement is signed by each tenant upon arrival as well as an inventory of contents.
A rental guarantee of 200€ will be deducted from the first paycheck. This amount will be reimbursed at the end of June 2025 paycheck if, and only if, the maintenance of the accommodation has been done according to the requirements and regulations.
